In its first two decades, AKU’s major development focus was in the fields of health and education. In addition, the University is in the process of planning new academic and research units. These include an Institute of Economic Growth and Society and an Institute of Planning and Management of Human Settlements. Another programme under consideration is an Institute of Human Development, which would be dedicated to advancing the understanding of the effects and conditions of early childhood on subsequent well-being and performance, and the application of this understanding to the development of interventions and evaluation to assess their potential efficacy and applicability.

Pakistan and several other countries in the world, including theUS ,Canada and theMiddle East after a highly rigorous admission process that includes a competitive entrance exam and interviews. AKU prides itself on the diversity of its student body. Most choose to live in thehostel s on the gorgeous medical campus although a fair number of students are locally fromKarachi . Male and female students have separatehostel s located on campus.A popular ritual is T-Half whereby medical students celebrate the half time to their graduation. Other traditions include the Secret Friend Quest involving first and second years. The first years are given clues leading to a secret friend of the opposite sex from the second year, alloted to them by a ballot. Each clue comes with a price. The first years then have to identify who this Secret Friend is before the welcome party, or else, face the consequences, which includes throwing the guys into one of the oncampus lakes and making the girls jog around the entire campus once. After the welcome party hosted by the second years, the first years have to hold a Thank You party in return. Scavenger Hunts are also pretty popular at AKU.
