Yamuna Expressway (Hindi: यमुना एक्सप्रेसवे), formerly known as Taj Expressway project was conceived with the idea of reducing the travel time between Noida and Agra. It is the ambitious project launched by the Mayawati Government.

It will be a 6-lane (extendable to 8 lanes) access-controlled Expressway and will connect Delhi with Agra via Mathura.

The Expressway is to be developed in three phases:-

  • Phase I: Expressway Stretch between Greater Noida & Taj International Airport.
  • Phase-II: Expressway Stretch between Taj International Airport and an intermediate destination between Taj International Airport & Agra.
  • Phase III: Expressway Stretch between intermediate destination & Agra.

According to an Indian newspaper report, the project is 99% complete as of November 2011.[1] The report claimed the Expressway may open up for public use sometime in December 2011, with a speed limit of 100 kilometer per hour for light motor vehicles and 60 kilometer per hour for heavy vehicles. Strict rules shall apply on vehicles allowed to enter the expressway, with a required minimum speed limit. The Expressway will feature CCTV cameras every 5 kilometers along the expressway for safety and accident assistance; mobile radars to monitor compliance with minimum and maximum speed limits; and one highway patrol every 25 kilometer. Once released for public use, the report claimed that the Expressway is expected to be used by over 100,000 vehicles every day, and reduce transfer times between New Delhi and Agra by about 50%.

Yamuna Expressway is being implemented by Jaypee Group. According to Jaypee, the Expressway is expected to start commercial service before March 2012[2], about two years ahead of its original target completion date.

The objectives of the expressway are as follows:

  • To provide a fast moving corridor to minimize the travel time.
  • To connect the main townships / commercial centres on the eastern side of Yamuna.
  • To ensure development of adjoining area.
  • To relieve NH-2 which is already congested and runs through the heart of cities like Faridabad, Ballabgarh and Palwal.
  • Reduce pollution and carbon footprint of vehicles travelling between New Delhi and Agra (commercial as well as tourists visiting the Taj Mahal).
  • Improve vehicle fuel mileage efficiency, reduce wear and tear on vehicles, and reduce logistical costs.
  • Enable farmers in western Uttar Pradesh to move agricultural, horticultural and milk products rapidly to major cities.
  • Accelerate movement of supplies and help to affected areas during Yamuna floods and other emergencies.
