Analog switchoff in favor of DVB-T

The Government of Croatia decided that multicast (simultaneous analog and digital DVB-T simultaneous broadcasting of the main channels) cease to exist in 2010. Croatian territory was split into 9 digital regions where national broadcasts are available. Former local broadcast services now advance to regional broadcast services and local broadcast services as such cease to exist. Regional broadcast services will cover more territory.

The dates for the switchoff of the main analog broadcast network were:[4][5]

HDTV

In Croatia there were two testing HDTV channels HRT HD and Nova TV HD. HD TV channels were available only in major cities(Zagreb, Split, Osijek, Rijeka and Pula). On February 4th 2011., the experimental broadcasting stopped because the license for it expired.

Multiplexes

In Croatia there are three MUX-es active. MUX A and MUX B are for national channels, and MUX D is for national/regional channels. MUX A currently broadcast both HRT channels, Nova and RTL. MUX B currently broadcast RTL2 and Doma TV. MUX D currently broadcast regional channels and three national channels : Sportska Televizija, Kapital Network and CMC.

Additionally, Kapital Network was originally broadcasted in MUX B, as the holder of a license for a testing period, they won an experimental 6-month period license. Now, Kapital Network is broadcasting in MUX D, which is, by the new plan, carring both regional and national services at the same time.

The competition for two channels in the MUX B was announced in July 2010. The Electronic Media Agency of the Croatian government received offers for the following channels: RTL 2, Doma TV, OBN and Kapital Network. Final licenses were given to RTL 2 and Doma TV. RTL2 and Doma TV started broadcasting on January 2. 2011.

Licences for broadcasting in national part of Mux D were given to CMC (Croatian Music Channel), Sportska Televizija (by Croatian Olympic Committee) and Kapital Network in December 2010. They started broadcasting in the second half of March and the first half of April 2011.

Regional broadcasts

MUX D is now active in regions with digital only broadcast:

  • In D1 regional channels are Vinkovačka TV, Osječka TV and Slavonska TV.
  • In D2 regional channel is SBTV.
  • In D3 regional channels are Varaždinska TV and Srce TV.
  • In D4 regional channels are Jabuka TV and Net TV.
  • In D5 regional channels are Kanal RI, Ri TV, TV Istra and TV Nova from Pula.
  • In D6 and D7 regional channel is VOX TV from Zadar.
  • In D8 regional channels are TV Jadran and TV Dalmacija, both from Split.
  • In D9 regional channel is DUTV.

Future plans

In future MUX A will stay the same(HRT1, HRT2, RTL TV and Nova TV). MUX B will get HRT's two new channels. HRT must start broadcasting this two channels until the end of 2012. MUX D will have new 2 or 3 regional channels.
