Location: 185 Washington St., Norwich, Connecticut Coordinates: 41°32′3″N 72°5′0″W / 41.53417°N 72.083333°WCoordinates: 41°32′3″N 72°5′0″W / 41.53417°N 72.083333°W Area: 2 acres (0.81 ha) Built: 1870 Architectural style: Gothic Governing body: Private NRHP Reference#: 70000716[1] Added to NRHP: October 6, 1970 The Converse House and Barn are two structures at 185 Washington Street in Norwich, Connecticut.
It was the home of Colonel Charles A. Converse.[2]
They were both photographed by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1960. The Converse House and Barn, as a pair, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1970.[1] According to the NRHP application,
This house is important because it is characteristic of domestic building of the 1870s when High Victorian Gothic was the prevailing fashion in architecture. The vertical proportions, irregular shape, and polychrome exterior combine to enforce an effect of calculated restlessness. Other aspects of the building which make it a paradigm of High Victorian taste are the complex roofline with its many gablets and dormers and the solidity and structural relevance of its trim which contrasts with the delicacy of earlier Gothic ornamentation.[2]:3
The property is included in the Chelsea Parade Historic District, also NRHP-listed.
