The area is situated at the meeting point of three boroughs (known as the 'golden triangle'): Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. It is close to Southgate but is regarded as a separate "village".
The postcode area N11 - which includes parts of Arnos Grove, Bounds Green and Friern Barnet, as well as New Southgate - is often still referred to simply as New Southgate, as in the original alphabetical listing of North London postal areas.
The area is served by New Southgate railway station and Arnos Grove tube station.
Much of New Southgate was once the hamlet of Betstyle, a name that was resurrected in the latter part of the 20th century when the road junction once called Lander's Corner (after the local monumental masons A.K. Lander) became a large roundabout and was renamed Betstyle Circus. The roundabout links Bowes Road, Friern Barnet Lane, Oakleigh Road South, Brunswick Park Road and Waterfall Road, which lead respectively to Arnos Grove, Friern Barnet, Whetstone, East Barnet/New Barnet and Southgate. The name New Southgate was adopted in the mid-19th century, probably shortly after the opening of both the railway station (originally called Colney Hatch after the hamlet west of Betstile) and Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum, which lay just inside the neighbouring parish of Friern Barnet.
New Southgate was home to Jerome K Jerome, writer of "Three Men in a Boat". He is commemorated here with a statue of a boat on the New Southgate Millennium Green on Station Road.
