The boundary changed in 1997 by absorbing most of Constituency link|Constituency = Hendon South and losing some wards to Constituency link|Constituency = Chipping Barnet.Prior to boundary changes in 1997 the constituency was called Finchley and Friern Barnet. The 1997 changes removed
Friern Barnet from the constituency and added Golders Green, Childs Hill and Hampstead Garden Suburb. The area was famous for once being represented by former Conservative Prime MinisterMargaret Thatcher and was thought to be safely Tory.Members of Parliament
