It is, along with the Mississippi Army National Guard, an element of the Mississippi National Guard. It is considered a part of the United States Air Force, as well as of the state.

- 209th Civil Engineering Squadron was originally formed as the 173rd Civil Engineering Flight in 1969. The primary mission of the 209th CES is to provide a highly mobile emergency engineering force for direct support of Air Force Special Operations and Fire and Emergency Services. The 209th CES is located at the National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center, adjacent to Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. In wartime, the squadron comes under the operational control of Air Force Special Operations Command.
