The public hospitals are managed by the Department's Hospital Authority. The Department reports to the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau.
The top official in this department is the Director of Health, and is now held by Dr Ping-Yan LAM.

The Department of Health's Pharmaceutical Service is responsible for drug registration in Hong Kong under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance (Chapter 138). All drugs sold in Hong Kong are required to be registered with a number in order to be sold in Hong Kong.[1] The number consists of a prefix HK followed by 5 numbers (e.g. HK-05628).
