It is the second oldest executive residence in the United States that has been continuously occupied as a gubernatorial residence (only La Fortaleza, the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico, is older).
On November 25, 1969, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior in 1975,[3][4] an honor previously bestowed on only one other state gubernatorial residence.[5] The mansion was also declared a Mississippi Landmark in 1985.[1]
