History
It received its Royal Assent on 31 July 1845.[1]
The engineers for the line were Joseph Locke and John Edward Errington, while the contractor was Thomas Brassey in partnership with William Mackenzie and Robert Stephenson.[2] It was however absorbed by the Caledonian Railway, by an Act of Parliament on 18 August 1846, prior to the commencement of services between Rutherglen and Motherwell on 1 June 1849.[1] Services on the section between Newton and Hamilton commenced on 5 September 1849.[1]
