It is owned by the George C. Marshall International Center, which is currently restoring the property to its Marshall era appearance.
Dodona Manor was constructed in the mid-1820s for John Dirsh. The house soon passed into the possession of the Ball family, who added an addition. There is evidence that the building served as a female boarding school in the 1850s. George C. Marshall bought the house in 1941 and lived there until his death in 1959. The Marshall's major contribution to the property was the addition of lush gardens and landscaping.
It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1996.[1][2]
In 2009 Virginia U.S. Senator Jim Webb and U.S. Representative Frank Wolf proposed legislation to study the affiliation Dodona Manor with the National Park Service. Affiliation would allow the site to remain in private ownership and would not result in staffing by the Park Service, but would result in a greater level of exposure through the Park Service's website.[3]
