List of Hey Arnold! characters

This is a listing of characters from the Nickelodeon animated television series Hey Arnold! and Hey Arnold!: The Movie. The list contains about 180 characters.

Characters

• Arnold, The main protagonist and title character of the series. Contrary to popular belief, Arnold does not wear a kilt, but instead dons a plaid shirt that hangs out of his blue sweater and a hat that only covers a small part of his football shaped head. Arnold tends to day dream from time to time. He lives in a boarding house with his grandparents. His last name was revealed to be "Shortman," a name that his grandpa frequently calls him throughout the series. The fate of his parents remains a mystery. He is often seen as the voice of reason in any dispute that comes up, whether it involve his friends or the boarders.
• Grandpa "Steely" Phil, Arnold's fun-loving, wise-cracking grandfather. He is 81 years-old. Arnold often comes to him for advice, to where he often tells Arnold stories about his past experiences (though he has had the tendency to stretch the truth). He was a World War II veteran, in which he claims to have single-handedly won the war by tricking a large troupe of Nazi soldiers into eating numerous cans of spoiled CHAM, thereby poisoning them and creating a hole in the enemy line for the American troupes break to through. He was once a master at Chinese checkers. He is also very athletic and can bench up to 210 pounds. (voiced by Dan Castellaneta)
• Grandma Gertie, Arnold's wacky but wise grandma who is often seen doing outlandish things. She is called "Pookie" by Grandpa Phil. She has a black belt. She and Phil had a similar relationship that Helga and Arnold have when they were kids (though her antics were a bit more vicious). (voiced by Tress MacNeille)
• Arnie, Arnold's strange cousin who lives in the countryside. He likes to collect lint, count things, and read the ingredients on the back of food containers. He is Lila's crush, however he loves Helga. He is often seen as strange, gross, dull or stupid by those around him.
• Miles, Arnold's father.
• Stella, Arnold's mother.
• Aunt Mitzi, Arnold's great aunt, Phil's twin sister and childhood rival. (voiced by Phyllis Diller)
• Grandpa's father, often seen in Grandpa's flashbacks to the 1920s.
• Grandpa's grandfather was seen in another one of Grandpa's flashbacks. He remembered doing chores one winter while his friends were ice skating only to be hit with a snowball by his grandfather who gave him permission to stop his chores and play.

The Sunset Arms boarders and their families

• Oskar Kokoshka, a lazy, self-centered con artist, presumably an immigrant from an Eastern European country (in one episode he is referred to as being Czechoslovakian), that remains unemployed through most of the series until becoming a paperboy. He is hated by pretty much everybody in the boarding house, especially Ernie Potts. His voice resembles that of comedian Yakov Smirnoff and he occasionally utters Smirnoff's catchphrases such as "What a country!". He shares his name with an Austrian artist.

• Suzie Kokoshka, Oskar's caring wife, who puts up with all of her husband's antics and laziness.
  • Nancy and Baby Oskar, Suzie's sister and nephew (Nancy never resided in Sunset Arms). Interestingly, they stated they named the baby Oskar before knowing of Suzie's husband, Oskar.

• Ernie Potts, a short-statured and hot-headed demolitionist who has a Napoleon complex; voiced by comedian Dom Irrera.

• Mr. Huynh, (pronounced "win") an immigrant from Vietnam, working in a Mexican restaurant. Despite having a heavy Vietnamese accent when speaking, it is revealed that he is very talented in singing country music. His singing was voiced by country singer, Randy Travis.
  • Mai Huynh, Mr. Hyunh's long lost daughter (never resided in Sunset Arms). She only appeared in the Christmas episode. It was revealed in the episode that she had been given to American troops during Operation Frequent Wind.

• Mr. Smith, mysterious person who is extremely secretive (to the point of communicating only through security cameras) and never speaks or shows himself to the rest of the boarders (appears in the first season only)

• Lana Vail (in the first season only; but seen as an extra in later seasons)

• Mr. Purdy (in the first season only; voiced by Joseph Purdy himself)

For short time in Sunset Arms lived Gerald Johanssen ("Gerald Moves Out" episode) and Rhonda Wellington Lloyd and her family ("Rhonda Goes Broke" episode).

Arnold's classmates and their families

• Helga G. Pataki (her middle name is Geraldine), is nine years old and in fourth grade. She is secretly in love with her classmate Arnold because he's the first person to give her attention and be nice to her. In one episode, Helga revealed to Lila that she loved Arnold so that she could get the role of Juliet in the school play and kiss Arnold. Later in the series, Helga admits to being in love with Arnold to the school psychologist, Dr. Bliss. However, it is implied that her best friend Phoebe is aware or suspects that Helga loves Arnold as in when she uses the code word "ice cream" during conversations. During her spare time she likes to devote her time to writing poems (mostly about Arnold) and collecting Arnold's used gum so that she can add it to her shrine of him which is a work in progress. She is neglected by her parents and calls them by their first names because she doesn't think they're worthy of being called "mom" and "dad." On rare occasions she does call them mom or dad. She resents her overachieving, perfectionistic older sister, Olga. Once in a while Helga will show a very small amount of love for her sister. As in the episode "Olga Gets Engaged" when she intervenes on Olga's behalf, saving her from what would have been a bad marriage and "Big Sis" when she reveals her jealousy of Olga's relationship with Lila. Probably because of her dysfunctional homelife, Helga is an insecure person and puts on a mean, and/or tomboyish front, making her the school bully.
• Robert "Big Bob" Pataki, her ambitious entrepreneur father, a successful beeper salesman. He has extremely high expectations for Helga and frequently compares her to her older sister Olga. However, Bob does care for Helga and it is evidenced in subtle ways. In the Halloween episode when Helga and her classmates dress up as aliens and things take a turn for the worst when the people in there city think they're real aliens, Helga's friends run to the water tower that they made to look like a UFO. Meanwhile Bob and his friends go to the water tower and throw a grenade at the water tower thinking it's a UFO. Bob see's the "aliens" and gets a hold of Helga unbeknownst to him and shakes her. All the while she keeps saying "Dad! It's me, Helga!" Once the water leaks from the explosion and rinses away the facial paint, Bob realizes it really was Helga and not some alien trying to play a mind game. He says "I almost hurt my own kid! I'm a monster!" And gives her a hug as well as a piggy back ride down the hill. The episode where it is very evident that Bob does care for Helga is near the end of the episode "Quantity Time." Bob has difficulty showing his emotions for Helga since she and he always come into conflict with each other and clash. He often mistakenly calls Arnold "Alfred". (voiced by Maurice LaMarche)
• Miriam Pataki, Helga's inattentive mother. There are implications that Miriam suffers from alcoholism, as she often drinks "smoothies", forgets things, speaks in a slow, tired voice, has had her driver's license revoked, and sleeps a lot (often in inappropriate places). However, in one episode when Bob injures his back and can't work, Miriam fills in for him. During the episode Miriam sobers up and holds down the fort. She also becomes more attentive towards Helga until she gets carried away with the job and realizes that she is ignoring Helga. Then, she quits and makes Bob return to work. However, her sobriety doesn't last long because in episodes following this one, she is back to drinking smoothies. But the viewer learns in a Mother's Day episode that Miriam was a champion bull rider and an olympic swimmer before marrying Bob.
• Olga Pataki, her intelligent, outgoing, beautiful sister, who attends the fictional Wellington College (or in another episode, Bennington College) and suffers from perfectionism. Bob and Miriam consider Olga to be perfect, which bothers Helga. There are times where her parents will confuse Helga for Olga. Fortunately, Olga does give Helga more attention than their parents much of the time and has good intentions. However, Helga does not receive Olga's attention or intentions very well and often tries to push Olga away and keep her distance. Olga has a tendency to view life through rose colored glasses and appears not to notice Helga's avoidance tactics nor does she react to Helga's short temper when it is directed towards her. Therefore, either Olga likes to avoid conflict since she rarely acknowledges her family's problems, is oblivious, or in denial. It is revealed in the episode "Helga on the Couch" that Olga through the years has reacted to her family's problems by being a perfectionist and keeping quiet about the situations at hand. This is evidenced in a flashback when Helga, as a toddler, interrupts Olga who is playing a tune on the grand piano. She tries to remind her parents that she has to go to preschool but is told by Bob, "Not now! Why don't you go play or something." However, she is ignored entirely by Miriam and Olga during the whole scene as well as by Bob after he blew her off. But after Olga completes the tune, she is too busy basking in her parents' attention. Whether she ignores Helga in that scene because she is being selfish and not wanting Helga to take away the spotlight or just oblivious is not established. But the viewer does learn from the flashback that the neglect that Helga has endured has been ongoing for years.

Due to the names "Olga" and "Helga", it can be presumed that they are of Russian/Germanic descent. Also, both names have the same meaning and are variants of each other. In addition, "Pataki" is a traditionally Hungarian surname. Also Helga, Olga and Robert are common Hungarian first names, however Miriam, while is an existing Hungarian female name, is very rarely given to baby girls.

• Gerald Johanssen, Arnold's best friend, who is African American. Throughout the series both he and Phoebe, another classmate, have a love interest in one another. He is also known for his funny looking afro, similar to Marge Simpson's.
• Martin Johanssen, his father, a businessman, he is obsessed with saving money, often going over the top on the price of things like the Electric Bill. It is revealed he is a Vietnam veteran, and earned Gerald's respect when Gerald finds out his father, a messenger and staff officer, saved the life of a downed Helicopter pilot.
• Mrs. Johanssen (first name unknown), his mother, works in the Corner Store as a cashier as seen in the Season 1 episode, "Helga's Makeover".
• Jamie O. Johanssen, his older brother, who often bullies him and takes his stuff.
• Timberly Johanssen, his younger sister, whose innocent actions often cause him trouble. Different from all of the other children in the show, Timberly seems to be the only character who ages across seasons. When she is first introduced as a character, she is said to be four years old, but in later seasons she is already in the first grade. (Voiced by Avriel Epps)

• Harold Berman, school bully and occasional friend of Arnold, overweight, revealed to be Jewish. Despite his teasing and bullyish tendencies, Harold is often revealed to be rather cowardly and usually cries for his mother whenever he gets scared. He is sometimes referred to by the derisive nickname "fat boy." Harold is 13 and has been left back in the fourth grade several times.

• Phoebe Heyerdahl, the smartest girl in the class. She is Helga's confidant. Her ethnicity is half-Japanese. Throughout the series both she and Gerald, another classmate, have a love interest in one another.
  • Kyo Heyerdahl, her Japanese American father (voiced by George Takei) Appears to have taken his wife's Norwegian last name. Speaks Japanese fluently.
• Reba Heyerdahl, her Southern American mother from Kentucky (voiced by Jean Smart)

• Rhonda Wellington Lloyd, a rich yuppie girl, pompus, self-proclaimed fashion queen. Rhonda is a Welsh American.

• Lila Sawyer, a nice girl who came from a farming community and lives with her father. Nothing is ever mentioned about her mother. She is Arnold's crush. However, she only prefers Arnold as a friend. She had a crush on Arnold's cousin Arnie. She knows that Helga loves Arnold and offered to help Helga become more like her in one episode. She was Olga Pataki's lil sis in the "Big Sis" episode and they seemed to get along with each other really well.
• Lila's Father is seen in the episode "Ms. Perfect". He appears to be a kind and caring father. When Lila is new to P.S. 118 and being bullied by some of her classmates, her father tries to be there for her. In the episode it is revealed that he had been unemployed and it ends happily with him getting a job.

• Sidney "Sid", a boy with paranoid tendencies. He is always shown wearing a baseball cap backwards.

• Stinky Peterson, tall and lanky boy from Arkansas, has a southern accent and a love for lemon pudding. He was originally portrayed in the first season as a bully and sidekick of Harold's, though this was later de-emphasized.

• Eugene Horowitz, a geeky, nerdy, optimistic boy, the class jinx. He has extremely bad luck and is often bullied. Eugene is Jewish American.

• Thaddeus "Curly" Gammelthorpe, the class psychopath. He has had outbursts throughout the show such as in the episodes "False Alarm" and "Curly Snaps."

• Peapod Kid (He got his name from the "Downtown as Fruits" episode. He was a pea pod in the play.) He appears to be rich and possesses an eloquent vocabulary.
• Joey Stevenson an African American boy who is easy to remember by knowing he is missing a tooth.
• Jonathan An extra seen in only a few episodes he is known for the 18 on his shirt and his glasses

Grandpa Phil also was Arnold's classmate in "Back to School" episode.

• Camp Fire Lass, a girl who sells chocolate turtles, speaks with a Scottish accent
• Jason "Chocolate Boy", a boy obsessed with chocolate. In "Chocolate Boy", it's revealed he eats chocolate because his nanny who he loved so much left him a bag of chocolate when she had to move a "far foreign land called Delaware". Arnold helps break Chocolate Boy of his obsession, but he only becomes as equally over-excessive eating radishes as a replacement.

• Conore "Connie", a sixth grade girl who "dated" Gerald; Maria's best friend
• Edmund, Wolfgang's sidekick, often asks stupid questions, causing Wolfgang to remark "Shut up, Ed."
• Gloria, a girl who looks like Helga, but is more girly and has a nicer personality (also voiced by Francesca Smith); first appearance was in "Magic Show" was a dream vision but was a reality in "Helga's Boyfriend" when Stinky began dating her and appeared as an extra in "Cool Party".

• Dr. Bliss, a child psychologist who evaluated the students of P.S. 118 for a day and later became Helga's psychoanalyst. Also the second known character that was told by Helga that she loves Arnold. This character only appeared in one episode titled "Helga on the Couch" and was (voiced by Kathy Baker)
• Miss Felter, a substitute teacher, Arnold's crush (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus)
• Mr. Frank, a sixth grade teacher, who is quite bored with his job.
• Lieutenant Major Goose, Arnold's teacher for short time (after Miss Slovak and before Mr. Simmons), a martinet. He also was Johanssen's drill sergeant during Vietnam War in "Veterans Day" episode
• Lunch lady
• Mr. Packenham, a fifth grade teacher
• Sheena's Aunt Shelley, the school nurse (already mentioned above)
• Miss Slovak, Arnold's enthusiastic teacher (in the first season). She left teaching to pursue a career at golf.

• Mr. Bailey, a worker of the Hall of Records. His first appearance was in the Christmas Special, where Arnold came to him to help find Mr. Hyunh's daughter, Mai. His 2nd appearance was in the series' feature film, where he helps trying find the document of the "Tomato Incident". When he couldn't find it, he tells Arnold about a man who keeps all kinds of historic records. (voiced by Vincent Schiavelli)

When she is shown Scheck destroying the document of the "Tomato Incident", she decides to make it a historic landmark once again.

• Mr. Scheck (Alphonse Perrier du von Scheck), a greedy developer who tried to tear down the neighborhood so he could build a mall, but was thwarted by Arnold, Helga, and Gerald. He serves as the main antagonist of Hey Arnold!: The Movie (voiced by Paul Sorvino)
• Sandy, Summer's boyfriend
• Sewer king, insane hermit who lives in the sewer
• Fuzzy Slippers, Gerald's off-screen, but referenced, informant
• Stoop Kid, kid who lives on a stoop and never leaves it until one episode "Stoop Kid" Arnold coaxes Stoop Kid to finally have the courage to leave his stoop. The only other times Stoop Kid is seen off of his stoop are in the episodes "Arnold Betrays Iggy", where Stoop Kid is seen in the crowd of people near the end of the episode, and "Cool Party" when he is a guest at Arnold's 'geek' party.
• Summer, a girl Arnold met at the beach, and developed a crush on (voiced by Beverley Mitchell)

Throughout the series, he has been depicted as unfriendly, deranged, depressed, and hated by his father (who happens to be his employer) In one episode, he was the umpire at a baseball game Arnold and his friends played against the fifth graders.

• Robbie Fisher, the Chinese Checkers champion who caused Grandpa "Steely" Phil to retire from the game some 40 years before their rematch in the episode "Steely Phil". His name is based on the chess Grandmaster Bobby Fischer

Ghosts

Usually appear in urban legends.

• Four-Eyed Jack, a former scientist and tenant who haunts the Boarding House. He lost his glasses but found them. Gerald did not believe in him until he actually saw him.
• Ghost Bride (Cynthia Snell), who killed her bridegroom and sister. She now haunts the cemetery she was buried in. The epitaph written on her gravestone reads "HERE LIES CYNTHIA SNELL, SHE LIVED HER LIFE AND WENT STRAIGHT TO" with the rest obscured with hardened soil.
• Haunted Train and its Engineer, that once a year appears on an abandoned train station. It had crashed forty years prior to the episode "Haunted Train."
• Headless Cabbie, who gives rides in the park (similar to the Headless Horseman).
• Wheezin' Ed, counterfeiter and gangster who currently haunts Elk Island.

Animals

• Abner, Arnold's pet pig. Was a gift from the Green-eyed People at Miles and Stella's wedding from a water basket. Phil first thought to cook Abner but Stella decided to keep the pig. Abner was mistaken for a girl by Stella, who wanted to name "her" Abigail.
• Big Caesar, the legendary giant fish that lives in City Pond; was captured only for a short time and had a hook stuck on him.
• Chester, Arnold's carrier pigeon.
• Cupcake/Thurston, stray kitten Harold was refusing to give back to its owner, a woman who was mean to Harold.
• Henry, Eugene's pet fish killed by Arnold with a yo-yo.
• Angel, Eugene's Angel Fish that Arnold adopted for him to make up for the fish, named ("Henry"), that he accidentally killed with his yo-yo. However, Angel was seen being eaten by a larger fish when Eugene had his back turned. Later on, another fish that Eugene believed to be Angel was eaten by an Octopus as Eugene walked away.
• Glue Boy, racing mule bought by Ernie, Oskar, and Mr. Hyunh who thought that it was a horse.
• parrot, who was bought by Big Bob, flew out an open window, and was discovered by Arnold who took care of the parrot. At the end of the episode, it was eaten up by Phoebe's monitor lizard.
• Monitor Lizard, Helga's unwelcome gift to Phoebe. It ate the parrot that Arnold had taken care of and it was assumed that Helga took the lizard in. (It makes a cameo appearance in the episode Principal Simmons. It is seen dragging Eugene across the hallway while the school goes out of control).
• Lock Jaw, an old, tired, graffiti-covered turtle that lived in the city zoo. Arnold and his grandma freed him.
• Pinky, Billy's pet worm; was squashed by Helga.
• Pooter (1924–1927), a dog Grandpa Phil and Aunt Mitzi had when they were young, and whose death caused their 70 years long animosity.
• Snappy, Stinky's turtle who was used for an April Fools' Day prank.
• Sidney, Sid's pet frog.
• Lurkey, Stinky's pet turkey, referred to as "Lurkey the Turkey", who came to an untimely fate when Stinky's family killed and ate him.
• Abigail, Arnold's cousin Arnie's pet pig. A polar opposite from Arnold's pet pig Abner. Seen in the episode "Arnold Visits Arnie".
