Season 0 (Pilot): 1996

The pilot episode of Hey Arnold! was released by Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies on July 10, 1996 in theaters with Nickelodeon's first movie, Harriet the Spy. It was later remade into the episode "24 Hours to Live" which was shown on February 3, 1997.

Downtown as Fruits: The first episode. Arnold and Gerald decide to take the bus a few too many stops past the school and end up downtown without money - until someone drives by and throws them a bag of cash.
Eugene's Bike: When Eugene's bicycle is ruined thanks to Arnold, Arnold realizes that he's been involved in quite a few of Eugene's accidents, so he takes him out for a day of fun - well, fun for Arnold, but mishaps for Eugene.

The Little Pink Book: Helga's little pink book, full of love poems about Arnold, falls into his hands, and she has to get it back before he gets to the last page (the only place where she put her own name), even if it means hiding in his closet all night.
Field Trip: While on a class field trip to the aquarium, Arnold learns that a turtle named Lockjaw is being unfairly treated by people who make fun of him. So he convinces his grandmother to aid in helping him sneak into the aquarium and set the miserable turtle free. 
3 3 "Arnold's Hat / Stoop Kid" October 14, 1996 (1996-10-14) 03
Arnold's Hat: Helga steals Arnold's hat to complete her secret shrine - a statue in the shape of his head made from Arnold-chewed bubble gum - but he feels he's lost a part of himself. In order for Helga to fix the problem, she has to get the hat, which her mother tossed into the trash that is now on its way to the dump.
Stoop Kid: While playing football on the street, Arnold kicks the ball and it ends up on Stoop Kid's stoop. According to Gerald, Stoop Kid is a boy who has been living on that particular stoop ever since he was born. Arnold tries to wait for him to leave so he can get his football back, but learns that he never leaves his stoop. Faced with this fact, he tries to convince Stoop Kid to overcome his habit by taking a step off the stoop. 
4 4 "Helga's Makeover / The Old Building" October 16, 1996 (1996-10-16) 04
Helga's Makeover: Due to her tomboyish nature, Helga is the only girl not invited to Rhonda's slumber party. Feeling left out she gives herself a makeover, and goes to it anyway.
The Old Building: Arnold is caught in the middle when Grandma and Ernie argue about whether an old theater should be torn down or not.

6th Grade Girls: Having met Connie and Maria, girls in the 6th grade, Arnold and Gerald, passing themselves off as 6th graders, attend a 6th grade dance.
The Baseball: When Arnold discovers that his favorite baseball player is retiring after one final game, he and Gerald go to the game only to get bad seats.

Heat: A heat wave engulfs the city; Arnold and Gerald try to find ways to escape the heat.
Snow: A snowstorm comes to the city. Arnold's Grandpa tries to teach him work ethic while his friends play without him.

Operation Ruthless: While the "Cheese Festival" is in town, Helga attempts to eliminate Arnold's interest in Ruth, a girl he likes.
The Vacant Lot: When Arnold and Gerald find a vacant lot and turn it into a baseball field that they deem "Gerald Field", the bullies overexert their power and take it for themselves.

The List: Arnold attempts to do everything on "The List For A Kid's Perfect Saturday", a list that no kid has ever been able to finish in one Saturday, but finds it hard going.
Haunted Train: Arnold, Gerald, and Helga hear Grandpa's "Legend of the Haunted Train" and head for the abandoned train station where it's said to appear - and the train that pulls up to the station at midnight matches the description. 
9 9 "Mugged / Roughin' It" December 2, 1996 (1996-12-02) 09
Mugged: Arnold learns the secrets of self defense from his Grandma after getting held up by a thug.
Roughin' It: Grandpa takes Arnold and Gerald on a weekend camping trip. As they set up the campsite, Bob, Helga, and Phoebe show up in a high-tech RV to rough it as well. Then, as everyone hikes up a mountain trail while exploring the great outdoors, they get lost in the wilderness. Arnold and Gerald agree to help everyone find their way back to their campsite by using Grandpa's survival tips. 
10 10 "Door #16 / Arnold as Cupid" December 9, 1996 (1996-12-09) 10
Door #16: Arnold is given a package, which is for the mysterious Mr. Smith. Meanwhile, all of the boarders become curious about figuring out what is contained in it. Now, Arnold and Gerald try to make a safe delivery while searching all over town for Mr. Smith so they can give it to him.
Arnold as Cupid: After getting into an argument with Suzie, Oskar is kicked out of his room in the boarding house. Feeling rejected by her, he tries to find a new room to sleep in, but no one agrees to it. Then, with no other option, he decides to move into Arnold's room. Soon, Arnold becomes tired of Oskar sleeping in his room, so Arnold plays cupid to try to string Oskar and Suzie's relationship together again.

Arnold's Christmas: Arnold tries to find Mr. Hyunh's daughter (they were separated in the Vietnam War) as he carries out his duty as Mr. Hyunh's secret Santa. Meanwhile, Helga attempts to find the perfect Christmas present for Arnold.

Benchwarmer: Arnold and the gang play on a basketball team, but their coach tells them to throw the ball to one person, his son, Tucker.
Cool Jerk: A cool older boy named Frankie G. befriends Arnold but soon he realizes that he is part of a street tough gang who needs him to break into a store.

Pigeon Man: Arnold confronts a man that has known and trusted pigeons all his life after one of his gets sick.

Olga Comes Home: Jealous about her smart, talented, popular older sister Olga returning home from college, Helga fiendishly changes one of her grades from an A to B+, her first non-A since third grade. The "B+" sends her into a deep depression.
Sally's Comet: Arnold and Gerald mail in cereal box tops to receive a telescope so they can see the well-known interstellar event known as Sally's Comet. The problem is that it's too bright for them to see the stars. Now they try to convince everybody in the city to turn off their lights. 
17 17 "Abner Come Home / The Sewer King" January 20, 1997 (1997-01-20) 16
Abner Come Home: Abner, Arnold's beloved pet pig, sees a cat out the window and he runs out of the boarding house to chase it, which leads to him running far away from home. The next morning, Arnold wakes up to realize that Abner is gone. Later, he announces a search party so everyone can help find Abner before something bad happens to him.
The Sewer King: While Arnold goes out to bring Grandpa his golden watch back from the store, he sees a gigantic hole being dug for new sewer pipes at a construction site. As he looks down it, the watch falls out of his pocket and into the sewer. Now, Arnold and Gerald must go down there to retrieve it, only to find that it's in possession of the Sewer King.

False Alarm: Eugene is framed for pulling the fire alarm at school. Arnold interrogates his friends in a makeshift courtroom in the library to discover the real culprit.
World Records: Arnold and his friends try to get into the Guinness Book of Records.

Magic Show: While Arnold is carrying out a magic trick, Helga runs away, gets knocked out, and experiences a dream where everyone on Earth is happier with her gone.
24 Hours to Live: Harold challenges Arnold to a fight, and he gives him 24 hours to live.

Save The Tree: Arnold and other 4th graders try to save their tree house from being torn down for a Big Bob's Beepers establishment.
New Teacher: After their last teacher, Mrs. Slovak, retires, Arnold's class gets a new one, Mr. Simmons. They play the usual pranks for all new teachers, which he is familiar with. They don't bother him, but when Harold eats his lunch, he loses all hope of being able to teach them and quits. When Lieutenant Major ends up being their next one, they try to get Mr. Simmons back.

*Note: Save the Tree was presented in Chroma-Depth 3D (known on Nickelodeon as "3D Nogglevision"). *Note: There is no such rank as "Lieutenant Major" anywhere in the U.S. Military and he's a satire of [[]].

Helga's Love Potion: Helga buys an "out-of-love" potion to cease her obsession with Arnold.
Gerald's Secret: Arnold helps Gerald learn to ride a bike after he discovers he had a traumatizing experience with one once before.

The Big Scoop: The gang prints the school newspaper, but Helga is disappointed when Arnold refuses to spread rumors through it. She starts her own with the help of Phoebe, but it is based entirely on lies.
Harold's Kitty: Harold finds a cat that he soon grows attached to, only to find out that it belongs to an old lady who he thinks is mean.

Longest Monday: The kids try to avoid getting thrown in dumpsters and trash cans as part of an annual ritual.
Eugene's Pet: After Arnold accidentally kills Henry, Eugene’s pet goldfish, he must find a replacement pet for him.

Monkey Business: Helga thinks she will die from a superstitious 19th century disease, monkeynucleosis, after coming into contact with a monkey.
Big Caesar: Arnold and Gerald compete in a fishing competition against thier friends to catch a legendary fish named Big Caesar.

Ransom: Timberly's doll gets stolen so Gerald and Arnold try to find it, only to find out she was the thief.
Ms. Perfect: Lila, a new student, comes to P.S. 118. Helga and the other girls play tricks on her in an attempt to drive her out of the social hierarchy.

Arnold's Halloween: This episode is a parody of the panic caused by Orson Welles' adaptation of "The War of the Worlds". The whole city mistakes a Halloween prank set up by Arnold and Gerald as an actual alien invasion.

*Note: This episode airs 59 years and 3 days to the day of Orson Welles' radio broadcast on which this episode is based. The alien costumes that the gang wears in this episode resemble the Talosians of the pilot Star Trek episode, The Cage. 
8 28 "Arnold Saves Sid / Hookey" November 2, 1997 (1997-11-02) 33

Arnold Saves Sid: Arnold saves Sid from being "crushed" by a large sign, so he decides to become his servant to repay him, much to his chagrin.
Hooky: Arnold and Gerald play hooky and have to sneak around everywhere to avoid being caught.

*Note: Despite Ms. Slovak leaving the show in Season 2, she appears in Arnold Saves Sid, causing a continuity error. This is due to a resequencing of episodes, causing deviation from production order.

Freeze Frame: Arnold and Gerald accidentally film a man putting a note in the hollow of a tree. Thinking he might be suspicious, they decide to investigate his actions, and become embroiled in a conspiracy.
Phoebe Cheats: Phoebe cheats in a poetry contest in her class by copying a poem out of a book. However, she thinks the statue of Emily Dickinson that she wins is calling her a cheater, such is her guilty conscience. 
10 30 "Mud Bowl / Gerald Moves Out" November 16, 1997 (1997-11-16) 35
Mud Bowl: Wolfgang and the other fifth graders challenge Arnold and his friends to a football game, but he has to first persuade them that his plays are good enough for them to win.
Gerald Moves Out: Gerald, getting tired of his family bugging him, moves out of his home and into Arnold's boarding house, only to realize emancipation is not all it is cracked up to be.

The High Life: Gerald becomes an entrepreneur out of selling watches until the market becomes saturated.
Best Friends: Rhonda and Nadine fall out over working on a project at school, leaving Arnold to work with both of them separately.

Steely Phil: Arnold's Grandpa enters a Chinese Checkers tournament to reclaim his pride lost forty years ago. Robby Fisher's name is a parody of Bobby Fischer.

Eating Contest: Arnold enters an eating contest.

Harold's Bar Mitzvah: Harold runs away from his Bar Mitzvah, thinking he will retain his childhood this way.

Harold the Butcher: As punishment for shoplifting a ham, Harold is forced to work for Mr. Green at his butcher shop. Later, after his work shift to pay for it is over, he soon learns that he actually likes his new after-school job and doesn't want to stop working there, much to the dismay of Mr. Green.

Dangerous Lumber: Arnold has a lethal baseball bat swing, causing him to unintentionally knock out other players, so he decides never to play the sport again, mere days before a baseball game against the fifth graders.
Mr. Hyunh Goes Country: Mr. Hyunh has a talent for country singing, so Arnold and Gerald, after recording a CD with him at the local studio, become his managers and make him a big star, much to his dislike. (Guest voice: Randy Travis

Phoebe Breaks a Leg: Phoebe breaks her leg after being hit by a bus while running errands for Helga, who feels horrible and attends to her every whim. She likes the attention and pretends to be injured a little while longer.

Parents Day: The kids all take part in the annual parent-child sports weekend, but Arnold feels left out and asks his grandfather about his real parents' whereabouts.

Suspended: Harold hates school so much that he deliberately gets himself suspended. He at first sees suspension as a vacation but it is not long before he realizes the true misery of his punishment. He then tries to get back to school, but the more desperate his attempts to do so, the longer the suspension Principal Wartz gives him.
Ernie in Love: Ernie meets a plus-sized woman, but feels insecure that one like her would be interested in a man like him. Lola voiced by Jennifer Tilly

Summer Love: Arnold goes on vacation to the beach with his grandparents and the other boarders, intending to get away from Helga who, as usual, has been harassing him. On the Lam: Harold, Sid, and Stinky hide from the law after thinking they blew up the police station. They also kidnap Arnold and escape from the law, and the police are after them. He, bound and gagged, manages to untie himself.
Family Man: Mr. Hyunh wants to be the new head chef at the restaurant he works for. He pretends that the boarders are his family to impress his family-man obsessed boss, who comes round to have dinner with them. 
9 94 "The Racing Mule / Curly's Girl" October 18, 2002 (2002-10-18) 92

The Racing Mule: Oskar, Ernie, and Mr. Hyunh train a horse to win a race, along with help from Arnold.
Curly's Girl: Rhonda's mother's coat gets dirtied. Curly offers to clean it for her in his parents' dry cleaning store on one condition: They agree to, publicly, be a couple, much to her disgust. This is a parody of the romantic comedy Can't Buy Me Love.

*When this episode was originally intended to air, on October 11, 2002, Nickelodeon began airing "Married" instead. The network did not catch the mistake until just after the second half began, when they switched to the regularly scheduled "Curly's Girl". After this gaffe, Nickelodeon did not rerun it until November 19, 2003, when they repeated the same mistake. On January 11, 2004, it was finally aired in full.

The Journal: Arnold finds a diary and map that tell him more about his parents, and their possible current location.

*This is the real final episode in the whole series as it was the final one to be made in 2002. It was supposed to lead into the proposed "Jungle Movie", which was never made.

Eugene, Eugene!: Arnold and his friends take part in the musical Eugene, Eugene. Eugene, who gets the lead role, is outraged when the ending of the play is altered, and he and Arnold conspire to restore the play back to its original ending.

A Day in the Life of a Classroom: A film crew shoots a documentary of Mr. Simmons' class to be screened on TV, but he feels that they should follow a script, rather than be spontaneous.
