Maurawan is a town and a nagar panchayat in Unnao district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Geography
Maurawan is located at 26°26′N 80°53′E / 26.43°N 80.88°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 121 metres (396 feet). The location of Maurawan is 55 km away form Lucknow,42 km away from Unnao,45 km away from Rai Baraily and 62 km away from Kanpur.The nearest airport is Lucknow.
The great temple of Goddess Durga called as 'Bankhandeshwar' is one of most alluring and venerated place in Maurawan region, people not only from Maurawan but even from other districts come to visit this heavenly place. According to people, some British officers tried to demolish this temple along with the 'pindi' but as soon as they hit the pindi, a loud roar of tiger shivered the British. All the Britishers fled away from that place and could never forget the horrific experiences of Devi temple. Since then the region witnesses great rush mostly in the "Navratri" month and local people worship the 'pindi' everyday.
Name origin
People believe that the name Maurawan comes from distorted version of its earlier name 'Mor-wan', which is a Hindi word that means "Jungle of Peacock". One more story is also associated with the name Maurawan,According to a mythological story in past it was ruled by a king Harishchandra, who had immense faith in God, He was a firm believer of truth never lied in his whole life.Once god thought of taking a test of him,because of this he lost his kingdom,each of his friend turned into his enemy, King Harishchandra become penniless. A snake bit his only son while his wife who was working as a helper to present queen couldn't even afford a shroud for his dead son, then his wife tore her saree in two pieces to cover his sons dead body.God himself came in disguise and blessed harishchandra, He was again blessed with his son,the kingdom. God was very happy to see the peacocks dancing in rain and the mesmerised god blessed the king that your kingdom will be known as 'Mor-van' because of its lush greenery & natural beauty.
Maurawan is famous for its Havelis & ancient forts which are almost in ruins these days.The sweet called Peda & rabdi is delicacy of this town.Dussehra mela is known for many small vendors of near by villages for a good sale of their merchandise. Depiction of Hindu mythological book Ramayana is beautifully enacted in Ramlila by local people of maurawan.peolple of far flung areas come to visit Dussehra Mela.
Demographics
As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Maurawan had a population of 14,116. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Maurawan has an average literacy rate of 57.63%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 55%, and female literacy is 42%. In Maurawan, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Education
Maurawan is also famous for education it has three inter colleges and one Sanskrit Maha Vidyalaya which provides degree. Colleges names are: 1-K.N.P.N.Inter college.(established in 1897) 2-B.K.H.R Inter college.(famous for commerce) 3-Hazrat mohani school. 4-Rama devi saras swati shishu mandir. 5-Sanskrit Maha Vidyalya 6-Madersa Darul Uloom Ziyaul Islam 7-Munni Devi Bal vidya mandir. There have been some very good poets & authors from Maurawan,Writer of fictional serial Chandrakanta devki Nandan Khatri,Poet Arun Prakash Awasthi who received an award from president Dr.Shankar Dayal Sharma for his poetry.
Economy
The main occupation of people is agriculture and business,in agriculture people grow rice, wheat, pulses and mustard while in business people are involved in transport and hotel industry through which they generate revenue. Sweets making business is also flourishing, Peda and rabdi of Maurawan is also very famous. Chandan ganj market is the main market which includes everything, while it is famous for seeds.
