"Loca" (English: "Crazy") is a song by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira. It was released as the lead single from her third bilingual and seventh studio album Sale el Sol. Two versions of the song were recorded, one in English, that features vocals from British rapper Dizzee Rascal, and one in Spanish that features vocals from El Cata. The song premiered on radio on September 1, and later premiered on Shakira's official website.[2] JS remixes of the English and Spanish versions was released to iTunes in some countries on September 10, 2010.[3] The Spanish version of Loca was released on October 4, 2010.[4] Dizzee Rascal stated that Shakira was the one who chose him to feature on the English version of the song, and that he was honored.[5]
"Loca" became another big hit for Shakira in Latin America, Asia, Africa and many European countries, following the success of "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)". It fared moderately well in the United States, becoming Shakira's ninth top forty hit and also Dizzee Rascal's first charting single there."Loca" has been sold more than 2 million copies worldwide.
The single is yet to be officially released in the United Kingdom, originally to be released digitally and as a CD single on 13 December 2010. The releases were both cancelled and no explanation has been given since. In addition the single has also yet to be released in Australia.

Background
"Loca" is an interpretation of the artist El Cata's song "Loca Con Su Tiguere".[2] Shakira changed some instrumental melodies, gave the song a different beat and changed the lyrics. The song is heavily Latin influenced as it consists of contemporary merengue music with pop lyrics and rap over it.[6] About the collaboration Dizzee Rascal said that "I know it sounds a bit mad now, but you'll see it and see what's going on", he said. "It's me doing something different man, on a merengue tip."[7] Dizzee also talks to Billboard.com and said about collaboration that "She's a bit of a trendsetter -- she does loads of different things on a major scale". He added "You'd expect her to use an American rapper [for the song], but she chose me. It meant a lot." He continue "I'd like to be in that Spanish market. I got into the whole reggaeton thing when it came out, so I always wanted to get around to something like that".[5]
Reception
Critical reception
Sara D Anderson from Aol Radio Blog said that the song is with "horn-heavy merengue beats and techno dance percussion. [...] While Shakira lures in her man with 'Loca's hypnotic chorus, British rapper Dizzee Rascal delivers a notable rap interlude, affirming that he is, in fact, enraptured by a "crazy girl"."[8] Monica Herrara from Billboard said that "Shakira places more emphasis on tropical music with her new single, "Loca", which opens with a throbbing, slow-burn merengue beat over which she seductively whispers a stark ultimatum: "Dance or die." The strengths of her most recent work aren't discarded completely, though."[9] The Sun Daily said that "Recorded in the Dominican Republic, Shakira brings her signature fusion of musical identities to this production of Loca by blending the horn-heavy elements of merengue with a synthesis of techno percussions laid out to a dance back beat."[10] Carlos Quintana from About.com has said, positively, that: "This hit became even bigger with the irreverent video Shakira shot in Barcelona. The song, which is heavily influenced by Merengue, has a catchy and vibrant vibe that makes it a perfect song for a party night.[11] Jennifer Schaffer from Stanford Daily also enjoyed it, saying: "Shakira tells us to “dance or die” in “Loca”. The highlight of this hip-shaking, moderately paced dance track is Dizzee Rascal’s raps, set to Latin beats and complemented by Shakira’s famous moans and sultry rolled R’s."[12] Michelle Morgante from Boston Globe also praised it, saying: "Loca is a club-tempoed song that, impressively, manages to retain a spirit that is lost in some of Shakira's other attempts at language switching."[13] Allison Stewart from The Washington Post claimed that: "Loca is hip-hop merengue performed in two languages".[14]
Chart performance
On the week of October 14, 2010 "Loca" debuted at 98 on Billboard Hot 100.[15] On the week of September 18, 2010 the song debuted at number 40 on the Billboard Tropical Songs[16] and number 1 on digital tropical charts with great selling of 6000+ downloads.[17] On the week of September 25, 2010 the song debuted at number 31 on the Billboard Latin Songs.[18] The song has become Shakira's ninth number-one hit on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs and her thirteenth number-one hit on the Latin Pop Songs, making her the second female artist with most number-one hits after Gloria Estefan (14) on the former and the female artist with most on the latter. According to Billboard, eight of the top 10 tracks on Billboard's Latin Digital Songs chart are Shakira's, including the No. 1 "Loca" which sold 48,000 downloads, the highest-selling week ever for the chart.[19]
It also became Shakira's ninth top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, when it reached #32 on the issue date of November 6, 2010 after it ascended fifty-two places from #84 due to strong digital downloads and has so far surpassed sales of 255,000 digital copies according to Billboard within the United States.[20] It peaked at #36 on the Canadian Hot 100. On the week of September 27, 2010 the song debuted at number 10 in Spain[21] and at number 25 in Italy.[22] It has since reached the pole position in both countries and on the French SNEP Digital Chart and in Switzerland. "Loca" also topped the Greek Airplay Chart, staying on the first place for 17 weeks, and the Romanian Top 100, in 2011, becoming Shakira's fifth number-one there.[23][24] This make "Loca" the most successful single of all time in the history of the Greek Airplay chart.[25][26] "Loca" has sold more than 2 million copies worldwide to date.
Music video
The music video was filmed during a visit in Barcelona, Spain in August 2010. It was directed by long-time Shakira collaborator Jaume de Laiguana.[27] On September 23, a sneak preview of the video was released on Shakira's official website, showing her rollerskating, riding a motorcycle and dancing in a big fountain surrounded by fans.[28] The music video was released Wednesday, September 29, 2010. James Montgomery from MTV compared the video to Matt & Kim in their "Lessons Learned" clip and Erykah Badu in her video "Window Seat".[29] The Spanish city reportedly is considering fining the Colombian singer for stopping traffic as she filmed a music video, reports the New York Post. Shakira, who did not get any permits, danced in a public fountain (Pla de Palau fountain) and rode on the back of a motorcycle with her hair flowing in the wind, when she should have worn a helmet.[30][31] About the video Shakira said "The video is just about having fun and being real in this amazing place with real people."[10] The Spanish version of the video was released as the free video of the week on iTunes on 21 December 2010.
Walter Frazier from Billboard said that "Fitting to the theme of the song, Shakira dances in a water fountain, attracting passersby (she's Shakira, after all). Not surprisingly, some join her in the craziness and jump in the fountain. The song ends with Shakira, surrounded by her fans, dancing in open water. Shakira's right -- she's crazy but we like it."[32] James Montgomery from MTV gave positive views about the video and said that " It's a decidedly guerrilla endeavor that appears to have been done on a budget hovering around zero (aside from a performance scene, the entire thing appears to have been shot on handheld cameras). The Britneys, Beyoncés and Gagas would probably never make something like this ... and yet, here it works, mostly because, well, it just sort of seems like the kind of thing Shakira would do. "Loca" is the rare video that doesn't attempt to outshine the song it's based on. Instead, it complements it. There's a calculated madness to the "Loca" video, a vibrant, unchained energy, the kind very few artists can conjure up, no matter how big the budget. And, come to think of it, that's a pretty accurate way of summing up Shakira's entire career. It's called synergy, people."[29] The Sun Daily said that the backdrop for the single was the handheld camera and "Shakira opted to go away from the traditional big production music video to portray a spirited, fun-filled day being ‘loca’ in the streets with the people of Barcelona.".[10]
Live performances
Shakira performed the English version of "Loca" first on September 23, 2010 on the Late Show with David Letterman.[33] The song is also a part of the setlist on her fifth concert tour The Sun Comes Out World Tour.[34] Shakira went on Lopez Tonight to talk about Loca and showed the audience the dance steps for the same song.[35] She performed it on Dancing With The Stars on October 19, 2010, the release day of the album.[36] According to a YouTube clip, Shakira was leaving the Honda Centre in California and got out of her limo and performed "Loca" with two dancers on top of a car.[37] Shakira also performed the song on November 9 in the finale of the German X-Factor.[38]
Shakira performed the song with Dizzee Rascal for the first time on the MTV EMA 2010 on November 7, 2010.[39] About the performance Gabi Gregg from MTV said " The 2010 MTV European Music Awards were in Madrid last night, and from Miley to Rihanna, they had some pretty spectacular performers. In my opinion though, Shakira stole the show for two reasons: 1) She actually sounds the same live as she does recorded. 2) Her dance moves."[40] Jillian Mapes & Megan Vick from Billboard said "Dizzee dropped it like it was hot, before Shakira, whose hips always drop it like it's hot, moved into her World Cup anthem, "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)."[41]
