Major roads of the Philippines

Circumferential Road 5, also known as C-5 (or C-5 Road) is a beltway which stretches from Parañaque City to Valenzuela City in Metro Manila, the Philippines. It is one of five circumferential roads which surround the metropolis, running through the eastern portion of Metro Manila and effectively serving as a reliever road for Circumferential Road 4, better known as Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).

C-5 as a whole is better known by three names: the Taguig-Pasig-Makati portion as Carlos P. Garcia Avenue, the Libis portion as Col. Bonny Serrano Avenue, and the Loyola Heights portion as Katipunan Avenue. The Pasig portion was formerly known as E. Rodriguez, Jr. Avenue before the F. Manalo Bridge was built in Pasig, connecting it to Quezon City.[1] The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) however signs the entire road as Carlos P. Garcia Avenue.

Extension

On July 23, 2007, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said in her State of the Nation Address: The C-5 Road Extension in the North of Metro Manila will be from Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City to Navotas City and the South Extension will be from South Luzon Expressway in Parañaque City to Coastal Road in Las Piñas in the southern part of Ninoy Aquino International Airport. This Project, supervised by Department of Public Works and Highways, started last in April 2008 and completed in August 2009.

As of July 2010, the NLEx-Mindanao Avenue Link or NLEx Segment 8.1 are located in Valenzuela and Congressional Avenue Extension from Tandang Sora to Luzon Avenue are located in Quezon City has been already opened to all motorists in the North Extension and also the SLEx-Sucat Link or Carlos Garcia Avenue Extension in the South Extension are located in Parañaque.

At present, the New Commonwealth Avenue Flyover connecting Katipunan and Luzon Avenue are not yet complete due to demolition issues in Balara, Quezon City located at the North Extension. In the South Extension, The Coastal Road-Sucat Link or Carlos Garcia Avenue Extension in Las Piñas are not yet also complete due to issue of properties of Senator Manny Villar.

North Extension Controversy

The residents of Barangays Old Balara, Culiat and Pasong Tamo in Quezon City are against the C-5 North Extension Project because their homes are going to demolished and they do not have enough money to relocate. The location of project will be from Katipunan Avenue to Tandang Sora Avenue crossing Commonwealth Avenue through a flyover. The flyover ends in Luzon Avenue.

South Extension Controversy

Recently, the Senate of the Philippines investigated the South Extension since it passes many of Sen. Manny Villar's properties such as Camella. The original C5 South Extension was called MCTEP, and was already approved by the Senate. MCTEP was a road that would be made as a toll expressway.
