The University of Edinburgh Business School (formerly known as the University of Edinburgh Management School, Hereafter abbreviated as UEBS) is the business school of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The university has offered business education since 1918, and the MBA degree since 1980. The business school is closely tied with the Univerisity of Edinburgh, which received its royal charter in 1582.[1] UEBS offers a wide range of business-oriented degrees at the undergraduate and graduate levels and focuses on four key areas: financial services; public management; entrepreneurship and innovation; and carbon management.

UEBS typically admits only around 70 people per program for the MSc and roughly 60 for the MBA program.[5]

Alumni network and Advisory Board

One common method for alumni outreach is the Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club for short). The Entrepreneurship Club is a gathering of students, researchers, and successful entrepreneurs. The club puts on a number of events, including the Silicon Valley Speaker series, in collaboration with The Edinburgh-Stanford link (in collaboration with The School of Informatics), at which leading entrepreneurs and venture capitalists from the Valley come to provide advice and insights into their areas of activity.

MBA Programs

The Edinburgh MBA [8] has been taught for over 25 years and is designed to develop participants as leaders and team players in a multicultural context. The program consists of eight core subjects, taught in the first semester, followed by five options from a choice of around 40, allowing for specialization across a wide range of areas.

Here are the full-time MBA programs offered at UEBS:

Full-Time MBA (12 months)

Students on the 12 month course undertake a consultancy project called "The Lothians Consultancy Project" with a corporation and then complete their dissertations. The 12-month program is also available as a modular MBA and can be taken over a period of up to 48 months.[9]

Semester 1 Overview

9 foundation courses are provided including an Leadership and Professional Development (LPD) program with weekly sessions and special activities in the sixth week. The foundation courses are followed immediately by a Strategic Management course over 1 week. At the end of Semester 1 there are required degree examinations.

Semester 2a, 2b Overview

During Semester 2a students take the core course in Corporate Strategy and 3 option courses, selected from either day-time courses or evening courses, as well as the compulsory Integrative Project. In Semester 2a, the daytime option courses run over 9 weeks of 2-hour sessions, followed by degree exams. The evening options run over 9 weeks (with the examination, if applicable, taking place in the 10th week). At the end of Semester 2a students leave Edinburgh to take their options at a partner institution.

Semester 3

Work placement period for International Program (see below). The work placement is related to the final project (called Capstone Project), which allows students to gain experience living abroad.

Final Project (Capstone Project)

Students are required to complete a final project before graduation.

MBA in International Business (16 months)

Students on the MBA in International Business program (15 month) spend the period from April to June studying options at one of the School’s international partners and then undertake an international work placement before completing their dissertations.[10]

Part-Time MBA (36 months)

Taught in the evenings, this program allows individuals in the local area to undertake an MBA while working.[11]

The KPMG Executive MBA

This program has been designed jointly by the University of Edinburgh Business School and École nationale des ponts et chaussées (ENPC) School of International Management in Paris with KPMG European Training Center. It provides the opportunity for KPMG professionals and their clients’ high-potential personnel to complete an intensive high-level management development programme and earn the University of Edinburgh Postgraduate Certificate in International Business. They are also awarded the Postgraduate degree of Masters of Business Administration from the ENPC in Paris: KPMG Executive MBA.

Masters Programs

MSc in Accounting and Finance

This program focuses on key areas in accounting and finance. It is designed for graduates interested in following a career in the accounting profession, in academic accounting, investment and security analysis, portfolio management, corporate finance and corporate restructuring, or in regulating bodies requiring an in-depth understanding of accounting and finance. The program is designed to deliver financial expertise with a particular emphasis on understanding the discipline of accounting and finance.

MSc in Carbon Management

In this landmark collaboration between the School of Geosciences and the School of Business and Economics at the University of Edinburgh, the MSc in Carbon Management provides interdisciplinary training in the business, economics and science of carbon management.

The program is designed for economics, business, social and physical science graduates wanting an advanced academic qualification as a launch pad for careers in carbon and climate change management by business, industry and government.

MSc in Finance and Investment

This program aims to provide students with a specialist education in finance and investment. It provides a global perspective on investment markets and asset classes, practical knowledge on the processes and mechanics underlying investment, and builds on students' existing quantitative skills so that they are able to understand and practice investment-related mathematics. The program introduces students to relevant academic research, especially empirical evidence on investment-related questions. Students will learn about corporate finance, global financial markets, financial accounting statements, derivatives, portfolio management, investment analysis and investment mathematics. They will also learn about the use of software and sources of information in investment and risk management.

MSc in International Business and Emerging Markets

This program provides a unique[citation needed] opportunity for students who, with diverse educational backgrounds/working experience, want to pursue careers as business consultants, managers and analysts in the broad arena of international business especially relating to emerging markets. The program may also be suitable for students from emerging economies who wish to bring themselves up to speed with contemporary thinking of corporate strategy including technology and financial management and business economics, and of public policies dealing with pressing issues relating to development in general.

MSc in Management

This program is designed to provide recent graduates of all subject areas and cultural backgrounds with a comprehensive overview of the key areas of management and a profound understanding of the essential concepts in management studies. In particular, graduates of a non-business degree, such as engineering, sciences, arts and social sciences, with little or no work experience will profit from this intensive program. Participants will acquire important analytical and management skills required for a successful career in a variety of professions.

MSc in Marketing

This program offers an in-depth study of marketing discipline through a comprehensive range of academically grounded courses. Students are provided with a thorough understanding of the theoretical foundations of marketing alongside current and emerging applications in marketing management, the analysis of marketing decisions, consumer behavior and marketing research methods. In addition, the program structure allows students to study aspects of marketing related to their interests thus supporting their intended career paths.

MSc in Marketing and Business Analysis

This program offers an in-depth study of the marketing and management science disciplines through a range of academically grounded courses, giving students an expertise in both areas. The program provides students with an understanding of marketing theory and instills an appreciation of the skills required in solving practical and analytical business problems through undertaking courses in marketing management, marketing decision analysis, business statistics and forecasting, and marketing research methods. Facilities

The School's facilities are located across a number of buildings on campus and their use is largely determined by the program. All buildings are within 10 minutes walk of the main University facilities.

Bristo Square

This purpose-built premises is used exclusively by postgraduate management students, researchers and executive course participants. It houses four lecture theatres, a computer lab, dedicated MBA syndicate study rooms and boardroom facilities.

The building has secure 24 hour access to provide for independent student learning and the opportunity to work with colleagues at convenient times.

Housed within Bristo Square is The Management Information Research Access Centre and Learning Environment (MIRACLE) which acts as the school’s knowledge base and electronic learning hub with course text books, business journals and company reports and the MIRACLE website. The website supports all the courses taught at the School and provides extensive access to a wide range of electronic business information, management research databases and on-line journals.

Internet Access

At UEBS, all of the main teaching areas are fully networked, with the majority of the building also covered by a wireless network.
