The 7th Earl of Bridgewater commissioned
James Wyatt to build the presentneo-gothic building as his home: it was completed in 1813. Andrew Bonar Law , a formerPrime Minister and in 1929 it became a "College of Citizenship" established to help the Conservative Party develop its intellectual forces in struggles withleft-wing organisations such as theFabian Society .
