"The Journal" was first published in November 2007 as an independent newspaper aimed at students attending five higher education institutes in the city: the
University of Edinburgh ,Napier University ,Heriot-Watt University ,Queen Margaret University and theEdinburgh College of Art . It covers a variety of topics, including local events, academic developments, national student news, and universitysport . It also includes sections of commentary and featured writing, as well as reviewing local arts events. The publication is independent of all of the institutions it distributes to (and their associated students' unions), and funds its publication throughadvertising sales andsubscriptions ."The Journal" distributes 14,000 copies via its distribution points around the city. It is printed on the Berliner format in

The paper is managed by a board of directors consisting of three former staff members of the University of Edinburgh's newspaper, "Student". A
sabbatical editor oversees production, and a sabbatical general manager organises advertising and other funding. A number of deputy editors are responsible for the various sections of the publication, while content is submitted by students attending institutions in Edinburgh as well as prominent local and national journalists, politicians and commentators.
