"The Journal" is an independent, fortnightly, local newspaper produced by students at five major higher education institutes in Edinburgh. It is distributed from a number of locations in the city's universities, as well as a number of bars and cafés in busy student areas.

Background

"The Journal" was first published in November 2007 as an independent newspaper aimed at students attending five higher education institutes in the city: the University of Edinburgh, Napier University, Heriot-Watt University, Queen Margaret University and the Edinburgh College of Art. It covers a variety of topics, including local events, academic developments, national student news, and university sport. It also includes sections of commentary and featured writing, as well as reviewing local arts events. The publication is independent of all of the institutions it distributes to (and their associated students' unions), and funds its publication through advertising sales and subscriptions.

"The Journal" distributes 14,000 copies via its distribution points around the city. It is printed on the Berliner format in Trafford Park, Manchester, alongside The Guardian, and is one of the UK's few Berliner format newspapers.

Organisation

The paper is managed by a board of directors consisting of three former staff members of the University of Edinburgh's newspaper, "Student". A sabbatical editor oversees production, and a sabbatical general manager organises advertising and other funding. A number of deputy editors are responsible for the various sections of the publication, while content is submitted by students attending institutions in Edinburgh as well as prominent local and national journalists, politicians and commentators. The staff includes a number of award-winning student journalists [cite news

Competition

"The Journal" is distributed alongside two existing student newspapers, both of which are distributed to single institutions: the University of Edinburgh's "Student" and Napier University's Veritas.

At the University of Edinburgh, the publication was refused permission to distribute inside university buildings by the Edinburgh University Students' Association [cite news

] , which cited concerns that the new publication may overlap editorially with the existing Asssociation-funded newspaper, "Student". The Association's president Josh MacAlister announced that a review of this ban will take place in January 2008.
