Peffermill Playing Fields

The University of Edinburgh's Peffermill Playing Fields boasts some of the finest sports facilities in Scotland. Located only 4km from the city centre and benefited recently from a £3.5m refurbishment to incorporate the National Hockey Academy, this magnificent 2.7 hectare site offers a hugely impressive array of training and competition facilities for everyone to enjoy. Peffermill comprises two internationally accredited water based artificial pitches, with surrounding floodlighting and a synthetic training track. Three changing pavilions provide ample facilities to support over a dozen grass pitches for football, rugby, and lacrosse as well as cricket, tennis and golf provision. Generous on site parking is available for 160 cars and six coaches.

The facilities at Peffermill are open to all, from the casual user to the international athlete with users from a variety of sectors including the University community, local clubs, corporate organisations, schools and national governing bodies of sport.

In recent years the quality of Peffermill's facilities has hosted international hockey events including a World Cup Qualifying tournament, the Millennium Youth Games, British University Games, European Women's Cup Winners Cup, both Adidas and Coca Cola Festivals of Football; international student rugby matches, international softball and lacrosse festivals, numerous domestic school sports and Club and corporate competitions. In July 2007, Peffermill staged the 2007 European Under 18 Hockey Championships, yet again underlining its place as a world class hockey venue. In 2010, it will host the 2010 World Universities' Hockey Championships.

In addition to sporting events our Laurie Liddell Clubhouse has hosted meetings, seminars and courses in medicine, sport and business.

t Leonard's Land

Located on Holyrood Road, just 250 metres from the Pleasance, is the superb 25 metre six lane pool, which provides a great environment for all levels of swimming, from recreational to elite. The pool is also used for research, lifeguard training and water sports such as Water Polo, Canoe, Life Saving, Triathlon or Swimming.

Clubs

EUSU has the broadest imaginable array of sports, with 65 different Clubs, all run for students, by students.

Below are links to each Club's own website, where you'll be able to find all the Club's details - activities, training times and locations, as well as contact details for the Club's Officials if you have a question or would like to become a member.

If you can't spot what you're looking for, or want to start up a new club, don't hesitate to contact the Sports Union Office, and we'll provide you with all the details you need.

Prospective Students

EUSU recognises that sport is increasingly a vital part of the university experience for people and that having information on clubs is vital for making that choice to ensure you have the best possible time at university. So the Prospective Students section of the website was created at: [http://www.eusu.ed.ac.uk/st/content/prospective/]

Competition

Edinburgh University sports teams compete in the BUSA [British Universities Sports Association] leagues. These leagues are regionalised through the first part of the year and then in February these become the Knock Out stages. The tables available for our league teams can be found here: [http://www.eusu.ed.ac.uk/st/content/Leagues]

Intra-Mural

EUSU has a strong Intramural sports tradition with variety, competition and friendly social play all available.

If you like sport but don't reckon you're the new Pelé or Flintoff; if you like sport but don't reckon you could run a marathon; if you like sport but hate being bossed about by your coach, then join up for Intra Mural sport this year.

Everyone's heard the old adage "it's not the winning, it's the taking part that counts" - and nothing could more perfectly summarise the Intra-Mural sports programme.

Sport at Edinburgh isn't just about winning - it's also about students enjoying sport in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Already the biggest in Scotland - the EUSU Intra-Mural programme is constantly growing in size and variety; a testament to its success. So dig out those trainers, polish your banter, find a good team name (recent gems include "Yer Maw", "FC Beercelona", "Arthur's Feet" and so on) and get involved! If your ego can take losing a football match by more than ten goals (trust the writer - this is sadly possible), your stamina can take getting up at 7am on Sunday to cross Edinburgh (this doesn't happen very often - honest!), your guts can take the post match celebrations and most importantly you enjoy having fun, then this programme is for you!

Football (Men's and Women's), Basketball, Cricket (summer term), Hockey, Netball, Rugby and Squash are all up for grabs, and fixtures are played weekly. Although it's all about having fun and participating , there are league tables (and bragging rights) at stake, so be sure to avoid mid table mediocrity or relegation dogfights! Get stuck in with a bunch of mates, but be quick, the leagues are very quickly fully subscribed. Registration forms are available at the Sports Union office.

Future

EUSU, along with the Centre for Sport and Exercise, is investing in the development of the University's sporting scene. New facilities are planned and under construction including a new Archery range, an expansion of the Pleasance Sports Centre and a 3G Astroturf pitch at Peffermill.
