History

The parkland south of Paddington was named after Charles Moore, Mayor of Sydney from 1867–69, who fought for the land to be dedicated as a leisure area for the people of Sydney and suburbs. The land was part of 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) originally set aside by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810 for grazing and watering stock.

Sydney's first zoo was established here in 1879 on 7 acres (28,000 m2) of land known as Billygoat Swamp. The zoological gardens covered 15 acres (61,000 m2) by 1906 but moved to Bradley's Head at the site now known as Taronga in 1917. It was replaced by Sydney Girls High School which opened on this site in 1921. Students transferred from Elizabeth Street, which became the site of the David Jones Department Store. Sydney Boys High School opened in 1928 on the remaining zoo land.

An infamous pack rape crime occurred in the park, leading to the 1886 Mount Rennie rape case. Nine men were sentenced to death and four were hanged despite controversy.[3]

Commercial area

Bent Street, Entertainment Quarter

Moore Park is the former location of the Royal Agricultural Society's Sydney Showground, which hosted the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show until 1998. It moved to Homebush Bay (the site of the 2000 Olympic Games). The old showgrounds have since been redeveloped as Fox Studios, a commercial venture designed at supporting Australia's film industry.[4] The Entertainment Quarter is a retail, dining and entertainment precinct beside the studios. It contains cinemas, live venues, restaurants, cafes, pubs, and retailers of fashion and homewares. The Farmer's Market operates every Wednesday and Saturday in the old showground showring.[5]

The south-western corner of the suburb boasts a large shopping centre called the 'Moore Park Supa Centre', on South Dowling Street. It specialises in showrooms for home furnishings and home renovations. This was the site of the former Dowling Street tram depot.

Transport

The Eastern Distributor and Anzac Parade are major arterial roads on the western border of the suburb. Sydney Buses operate frequent services to Moore Park from the Sydney CBD and special services for sporting events run from Central railway station.

The Moore Park Magpies are a local junior rugby league team.

The Hordern Pavilion is a multipurpose entertainment venue, while next door the Royal Hall of Industries (fondly remembered as the old Showbag Pavilion during the Royal Easter Show days) hosts a range of exhibitions, social and commercial events and shows.
