Donnelly is a village in northern Alberta, Canada, located approximately 5 km east of Falher, Alberta which is approximately 115 km northeast of Grande Prairie, Alberta near the junction of Highway 2 and 49.

Demographics

The population of the Village of Donnelly according to its 2008 municipal census is 374.[2]

According to the 2006 census:

  • Population of 293 living in 135 dwellings, a -16.5% increase from 2001.
  • Land area of 1.04 km2 (0.40 sq mi)
  • Population density of 280.9 /km2 (728 /sq mi).[1]

History

  • 1912: A group of 14 settlers from Grouard arrived in the Donnelly area.
  • 1917: Donnelly's first post office is opened.
  • 1956: Donnelly becomes a village.

Educational Institutes

École Georges P. Vanier School

École Georges P. Vanier is a junior/senior high school from grades 7 to 12. Approximately 400 students attend this school every year. Students are bussed in from various areas of the Smoky River region.

Attractions

Every second year the Smoky River Agricultural Fair is held in Donnelly in mid August, and the Annual Father's Day Demolition Derby is held each year in June. The derby attracts quite a crowd, and is located on the west side of the village.
