The village was named for Duchess Louise Marguerite. It is mainly a ranching community.

In 2006, Duchess had a population of 978 living in 351 dwellings, a 17.0% increase from 2001. The village has a land area of 1.89 km2 (0.73 sq mi) and a population density of 518.8 /km2 (1,344 /sq mi).[1]
