It is wholly owned by Corus Entertainment, with its name licensed from MTV Networks International, a division of Viacom.
As with its counterparts in the U.S. and elsewhere, Nickelodeon airs programs aimed at children, including live-action series and animation. Corus already owns two similar channels, YTV and Treehouse TV, which have carried Nickelodeon programs for many years under output agreements with Viacom. Both channels will continue to air Nickelodeon programs in the future, despite the launch of Nickelodeon Canada, since those channels have near-universal coverage across Canada on basic analogue cable, whereas Nickelodeon is limited to digital distribution.
Citing the Nicktoons digital cable channel in the United States adding shows outside of animation, the Canadian Nickelodeon is very similar to Nicktoons and TeenNick, while YTV has got similarity with the American Nickelodeon and the Treehouse TV airing similarities to Nick Jr.
This marks the second Viacom-branded channel to be owned by Corus; the companies also partner on CMT Canada.

History
The channel launched on November 2, 2009 using the "YTV OneWorld"[1][2] licence, granted to Corus by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in September 2008. Jacob Two-Two was the first show broadcast. On the day of the channel's launch, Discovery Kids (which Corus also owned) was shut down and replaced by Nickelodeon on most cable and satellite providers.[3] However, cable and satellite companies had to reach new agreements with Corus in order to carry Nickelodeon, as Discovery Kids operated under a different licence.
Programming blocks
Nick Jr.
Nick jr. Canada is a programming block dedicated towards preschoolers. It airs every weekday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. It has the same graphics as Nick's Playdate, which airs on Nickelodeon in the USA. Unlike the US channel of the same name, Moose and Zee are not seen because they don't appear at all in Canada. Also, like Nick's Playdate, it shows traditional commercial breaks between shows and it doesn't have common continuity.
