It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.
It was created by the Boundary Commission in their report of 1995, for the 1997 general election; the largest part of it was previously in Loughborough. Charnwood is a Conservative Party stronghold.

Boundaries
Charnwood constituency lies between Leicester and Nottingham and covers the local government district of Charnwood, which includes the town of Loughborough. Loughborough itself however is a separate constituency to the North. A boundary change in 1995 saw Stephen Dorrell move from Loughborough to Charnwood with Labour taking Loughborough.
