It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post voting system.
Following their review of parliamentary representation in Derbyshire, the Boundary Commission for England created a new constituency of Derbyshire Dales, based on the previous West Derbyshire seat. It was fought for the first time at the 2010 general election.
It is represented by Conservative Patrick McLoughlin, the Government Chief Whip.

The electoral wards which make up the new seat of Derbyshire Dales come from the district of Amber Valley in the form of the wards of Alport, Crich and South West Parishes and the entire district of Derbyshire Dales, after which the constituency is named.
