It is an area of many contrasts such as Ravenshead, home to some of Nottinghamshire's most affluent residents, numerous smaller rural villages and many ex-mining villages and the town of Hucknall, now a commuter town but with a long mining tradition. The largest town isHucknall in theAshfield district. It also contains parts of theGedling district, including Calverton andRavenshead . The largest geographical area is the western part of theNewark and Sherwood district, including the town ofOllerton and villages ofBlidworth ,Edwinstowe ,Lowdham andRainworth .Boundary review
Following their review of parliamentary representation in
Nottinghamshire , theBoundary Commission for England have made minor changes to the existing constituency arrangement as a consequence of population changes. The electoral wards used in the modified Sherwood constituency are:
*From the district of Newark and Sherwood - Bilsthorpe, Blidworth, Boughton, Clipstone, Edwinstone, Farnsfield, Ollerton and Rainworth
*From the district of Ashfield - Hucknall Central, Hucknall East, Hucknall North and Hucknall West
*From the borough of Gedling - Bestwood Village, Calverton, Lambley, Newstead, Ravenshead, and WoodboroughHistory
The constituency was formed in
1983 . When local farmer Andy Stewart won the seat for the Conservative Party at the 1983 election by just 637 votes, the result was considered an upset in a normally safe Labour Party area. The Nottinghamshire miners drifted further from the Labour Party during the 1984 strike and Stewart was re-elected to the seat with an increased majority at the 1987 election. The seat was gained for Labour byPaddy Tipping , who has held it since, at the 1992 election.Members of Parliament
