Pennsylvania Route 462 is a 32-mile (51 km) long east–west running local route in central Pennsylvania. The western terminus is west of York. The eastern terminus is east of Lancaster. At both ends, PA 462 terminates at U.S. Route 30, and all of the route was signed as U.S. Route 30 before a freeway was built to bypass it. Having been once Route 30, which supplanted the Lincoln Highway, local governments and the U.S. Postal service have used that name and/or Old Lincoln Highway in addresses.

Route description

York to Susquehanna River

PA 462 eastbound on Market Street in York

The western terminus of PA 462, is at an interchange with U.S. Route 30 near West York. In York, eastbound PA 462 keeps straight onto Market Street, merging with PA 74 for about 1 mile (1.6 km). Westbound PA 462 runs as Philadelphia Street through downtown. PA 462/74 meets I-83 Business (George Street) at Continental Square. PA 74 separates from PA 462 at Queen Street, but PA 462 continues as two separate one-way streets through downtown. On the eastern boundary of the city, at Harrison Street, PA 462 merges back into a single four-lane divided highway, and continues as East Market Street. In East York, PA 462 intersects I-83 at exit 19. About a mile east of East York, PA 462 meets with PA 24. In Wrightsville, PA 462 has a "Y" intersection with PA 624's northern terminus, where PA Route 624 passes under PA Route 462. Immediately after the interchange with PA 624, PA Route 462 crosses the Susquehanna River on the Veterans Memorial Bridge, which is unofficially the longest concrete arch bridge in the world, at approximately 1.2 miles (1.9 km)

Susquehanna River to Lancaster

After the bridge, PA 462 enters Columbia as Chestnut Street and then it meets with Pennsylvania Route 441. PA 462 then turns right onto North Fifth Street. After a short time, North Fifth Street makes about a 20 degree left turn onto Lancaster Avenue. After Columbia, PA 462 changes name to Columbia Avenue and continues with this name until downtown Lancaster. West of Lancaster, it meets with PA 741. In the city of Lancaster, PA 462 eastbound continues on King Street. Westbound PA 462 is carried by Broad Street, Walnut Street (concurrent with westbound PA 23) and Race Street. West of the downtown area of Lancaster, the eastbound of PA 462 only meets with PA 999. US 222 and PA 272 meet PA 462 in downtown Lancaster. East of Lancaster, PA 462 meets with PA 340, which is called the Old Philadelphia Pike. In East Lampeter Township, PA 462 ends at an interchange with U.S. Route 30 a few miles east of Lancaster near the Lancaster Outlet Malls
