West York is a borough in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,321 at the 2000 census.

Geography

West York is located at coor dms|39|57|11|N|76|45|36|W|city (39.953148, -76.759921)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Public Safety

Reliance Fire Co. (Station 1) is West York's only Fire Department made up of paid and volunteer firefighters.

The West York Police Department is made up of 8 full time officer, including a chief, and part time officers. They have 3 Ford Crown Victorias sporting the bulldog logo, a dark blue Dodge Charger marked with the departments name, and a white unmarked Dodge intrepid. West York is the first police department in York county who joined the Teamsters Union in early 2008.

There are speed traps set up along Market st. as you come into West York from York across the railroad tracks. Drive slow and be alert as the speed limit is only 25 mph.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,321 people, 1,897 households, and 1,088 families residing in the borough. The population density was 8,759.7 people per square mile (3,404.8/km²). There were 2,010 housing units at an average density of 4,074.8/sq mi (1,583.8/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 93.75% White, 2.80% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 1.37% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.96% of the population.

There were 1,897 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.4% were married couples living together, 13.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.6% were non-families. 35.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the borough the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 34.6% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.7 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $34,604, and the median income for a family was $41,574. Males had a median income of $30,734 versus $22,338 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,503. About 5.0% of families and 6.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.9% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.
