Colan (Cornish: Kolan) is a village and civil parish in mid-Cornwall, UK. It is situated approximately three miles (5 km) east of Newquay.[1]

Fir Hill Manor, which once belonged to the Hoblyn family of Colan, was the subject of a BBC Bristol documentary, The Curse of Fir Hill Manor (1994). It tells the story of former Newquay policeman Derek Fowkes as he searches for the absentee landlord of Fir Hill Manor, John Paget Figg-Hoblyn.[2]

Parish church

Colan Church was built in 1250 and the present church dates from 1360. The church contains two interesting brasses.[3] That on the north wall is mounted on a slate slab depicting Francis Bluet with the date 20 May 1572, and Elizabeth (née Colan) his wife, with effigies of both, standing on either side of an impaled shield of arms, and figures of their 13 sons and 9 daughters.

The second brass on the south wall of the chancel is that of John Coswarth (or Cosowartha) Receiver General of the Duchy of Cornwall in 1575: this brass was originally set in the floor. In this Coswarth brass is a bullet hole and there exist two legends about this hole: The first being that a Cromwell sympathiser fired at the brass; The second story says that a rejected suitor fired at a lady as she was being married to someone else of her choice, the bullet fortunately missed her and struck the brass. The bullet hole can still be seen.
