River Fowey

It rises about 1 mile north-west of Brown Willy on Bodmin Moor, passes Lanhydrock House, Restormel Castle and Lostwithiel, then broadens at Milltown before joining the English Channel at Fowey. It is navigable only for the last 7 miles. There is a ferry between Fowey and Bodinnick. The first road crossing is in Lostwithiel. The river has seven tributaries, the largest being the River Lerryn.

Uses of the River Fowey

Sailing

The River Fowey is famous for its sailing because of its natural harbour . In the past it has been visited by up to 7000 yachts in one season.

Fishing

Many fish can be caught in the River Fowey so lots of fishermen come to enjoy the excellent fishing conditions.

Hiking

Fowey has very pleasant sites and special paths made for hiking and walking along the river and around the countryside surrounding the towns.

Tourism

Fowey is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. As well as hikers, holiday makers and tourists visit the river to visit places of interest and eat the freshly caught fish!

China Clay Industry

Fowey is famous for exporting China Clay around the world. Ships from many places pick up the clay from the harbour.

Transport

There are two pedestrian ferries and one vehicle ferry which connect Fowey Polruan and Bodinnick.

Transport On The River

Bus Services:

FirstOperates a regular daily service between Fowey and St Austell Service number 25.From St Austell Bus Station connecting buses operate to other locations in Cornwall. Last daily service from Fowey leaves at 2304hrs, Monday to Saturday.

Town BusA regular service running every 15 minutes from outside the church in the town centre to the main car park on Hanson Drive. Service runs seven days a week from 1000 - 1900hrs.

Polruan CoachA service between Polruan, Polperro and Looe from 1st June to 30th September.The service runs twice a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Roselyn Coaches Operates weekly trips to Plymouth, Truro and Trago Mills.

TruronianOperates 4 services per day (Monday to Friday) from Lostwithiel to St Austell, Stenalees, the China Clay Country Park and also stops close to the Eden Project. It also serves the village of Luxulyan where the Saints' Way footway can be accessed. Bus service number is T24. Departs Royal Talbot at 0852, 1057, 1317 & 1457.

Ferry Services

Fowey to Polruan Passenger and Cycle FerrySummer service runs 1st May - 30th September from Whitehouse Slip until 1815 hrs.From 1830 hrs service operates from Town Quay until 2300 hrs.Continuous service from 0715 hrs Monday - Saturday and 0900 hrs on Sunday. Please check notice board for further information during August. Winter service runs 1st October - 30th April leaving Town Quay.Monday - Saturday 0715 hrs until 1900 hrs continuous service.Sundays 1000 hrs until 1700 hrs continuous service. Ferry services are subject to weather conditions.The operator reserves the right to alter the service without prior notice.

Fowey to Bodinnick Vehicle FerrySummer service operates 1st April - 31st October.Service starts 0700 hrs Monday - Saturday and 0800 hrs on Sunday.

Winter service runs until 2045 hrs or dusk (which ever comes first). Winter service operates 1st November - 31st March runs until 1900 hrs. Service starts 0700 hrs Monday - Friday, 0800 hrs on Saturday and 0900 hrs on Sunday. Ferry services are subject to weather conditions.

Fowey to Mevagissey Passenger Ferry A timetabled summer service between Fowey and Mevagissey leaving Whitehouse Slip. Journey time is around 40 minutes, please see leaflet or notice board for sailings. An alternative route to The Lost Gardens of Heligan, finishing the journey by foot or taxi. This service is dependent on weather conditions.
