"Only You" is a ballad written by musician Vince Clarke. He wrote it while with Depeche Mode, and offered it to them when he was leaving. They declined, and Clarke recorded it after forming the duo Yazoo with Alison Moyet. It was an instant success, hitting number two in the UK, and charting in the U.S. (number sixty-seven, Billboard Hot 100), a feat only attained by one other Yazoo single (coincidentally, that single was "Situation," the original UK B-side of "Only You"). "Only You" also made the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart at number thirty-eight.

A remix of "Only You" made the UK Top 40 again in 1999, while reaching number sixteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. The music video for the new version was created using the Houdini 3D animation software package.^[1]

Clarke's melody in the song "has a sweetly yearning quality, elegantly arranged by Clarke and producer E.C. Radcliffe in a fashion that links several different monophonic synths together to give the tune more depth and melodic substance" according to Allmusic [1]. Moyet's vocals, they say, is a "perfectly understated vocal performance, soulful yet dignified in the manner of '70s soul star Ann Peebles, of Clarke's gentle and romantic lyrics."

Although not a Christmas song, it has become a popular song to play at that time of year. This is probably due to the Flying Pickets version being the UK Christmas Number One in 1983.

An a cappella version by The Flying Pickets was even more successful than the 1982 original on the UK Singles Chart, being released towards the end of the following year and becoming the Christmas number one in 1983. It spent five weeks at the top. This made "Only You" the first a cappella chart-topper in the UK, and was released on overseas markets the following year.

The Flying Pickets version went on to become a number one hit on the German Singles Chart in 1984 and charted in Canada as well, though it saw no chart action in the United States.

Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias recorded a Spanish version of the song, which was featured on his second studio album Vivir. The track was released as the second single from that album and became very successful, debuting at number 1 in the United States Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart (his second in a row, and the first artist to do so) on May 3, 1997,^[2] and spent ten non-consecutive weeks at the top.^[3] Iglesias also recorded the song in English, which is included in the album Bailamos Greatest Hits.

Other versions

• The song was a very popular among American college and university a cappella vocal groups in the 1980s and 1990s. Notable versions were performed by the Wellesley Tupeloes on their album Snafu. The Harvard Radcliffe Veritones performed it for many years and in their first few years, actress Mira Sorvino was the soloist. Although no album was released with Mira Sorvino performing, there are two known concert recording of her performing: Paine Hall Concert 11-15-1986, and the Ides of March Jam in Sanders Theatre 3-21-1987. The concert master tapes are held in the Harvard College Modern Language Center's recording archives.
• Judy Collins covered the song in the mid 1980s. Her version featured additional lyrics.
• A version by Rita Coolidge made the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in 1984.
• Kapitulation Bonn covered the song for the 1996 compilation Punk Chartbusters Vol. 2.
• American singer Jocelyn Enriquez covered the song on her 1997 album Jocelyn.
• Canadian dance producers The Boomtang Boys recorded a cover of the song with singer Liz Melody on vocals. The track was included on their 1999 Greatest Hits album.
• Hawaiian singer Makana recorded a cover for his 2000 album Makana.^[8] An audio sample can be heard on the artist's official MySpace page.^[9]
• Serbian punk rock band KBO! recorded a version on their 2001 cover album (Ne) Menjajte Stanicu (a.k.a. "(Do Not) Change The Station").
• A dance version was released by Jan Wayne (featuring DJ Maurice) from his 2002 album Back Again.
• Pop punk band Even in Blackouts recorded it for their 2002 album Myths and Imaginary Magicians.
• Singer-songwriter Joshua Radin released a cover of the song as a bonus song on his 2006 album We Were Here.
• German pop duo Lemon Ice included a cover version on their 2007 album One. An audio sample and a clip of the music video can be found on the group's official website.^[10]
• British indie band Goodbooks recorded a cover, which was available for download on the Internet.
• Electropop band Freezepop recorded a cover of the song, which was available for download on the Internet.
• Singer Ralf Youtz recorded a cover on his 2003 album "Those Darn Nineties"
• Richard Clayderman made an easy listening rendition of the song for his 1984 album 'The music of love'.
• Amy Diamond recorded a cover of the song for her 2010 album 'Greatest Hits'.
• In 2010 Jason Donovan recorded a cover version of "Only You" for his 80s covers album "Soundtrack of the 80s".
• Hungarian artist Pierrot recorded in 1994 his version of the song called "Telihold" (Full Moon).
• The French popular singer Mireille Mathieu recorded a double version of this song, in French ("On est Bien") and in German ("Mon Amour") in 1984. ^[11]
