Cooperstown, New York is at the southern end. Glimmerglass State Park is located on the northeastern shore. Glimmerglass Opera is located on the western shore.
The lake was known to James Fenimore Cooper as Glimmerglass and was a principal feature in several of his novels, including The Pioneers, The Deerslayer, and Last of the Mohicans in which one may find mention of such local landmarks as Council Rock and Sunken Island.
Hyde Hall, a mansion that was probably the largest in the United States at the time of its construction in 1817, overlooks the lake.
Otsego Lake is nine miles (14.5 km) long. It is geologically related to the Finger Lakes, but is not counted among them.

One significant difference is that Otsego Lake is situated at a significantly higher elevation (1227 feet) than the Finger Lakes (approximately 400 feet).
