Moth is a town and a nagar panchayat in Jhansi district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Brief history

The place was earlier called "मठ" and during British rule in India, the name changed to "Moth" due to their British accent. The place has an old fort which is almost in to ruins now.

Geography

Moth is located at 25°43′N 78°57′E / 25.72°N 78.95°E / 25.72; 78.95[1]. It has an average elevation of 191 metres (626 feet). the cricket team of moth is also famous. Nearest village-reo bakuan, bharosa, dhwar ki matan, dasna, reo is also one of them. There is a famous devi mandir, and high mountain, kasai babba mandior is also famous. There is an old neem trees, that is mounted by mr. gya prasad khare, there is also an old hanuman mandir and hardol mandir.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Moth had a population of 13,029. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Moth has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 71%, and female literacy is 57%. In Moth, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Specialities

Moth is famous in Jhansi district for its delicacies like Aaloo Banda, Mangoris, Jalebi-samosa and Pooree-subjee. For Pooree-subjee there used to be a shop owned by "Chirmole" that used to serve tastiest Pooree-subjee made by pure Desi Ghee many years earlier. This tradition was started from there and then is now preserved by many shopkeepers. There is a very old "Sawitri kee mangoree ke dukan" and the old lady sitting there has been serving high-quality mangorees for years. In summer the speciality is Kulfi of Moth made by Milkiram; it is the tastiest kulfi that you can get for two rupees anywhere in the world[citation needed].

Freedom fighters

Moth has had a long list of freedom fighters, who might not be very famous but contributed to India's freedom movement at length. One of them is Kanhaiya lal Agrawal(Chirmole), who died in year 1994. Other than those there was one Baba Rusia ( he could talk in reverse sentences) and one Bhalla baba who contributed to India's freedom struggle, Sidhgopal Tiwari(of Bharosa village) was most educationist. Their role is very important and at local level persons like them were skeleton of India's freedom struggle.
