Route description

MD 896 begins at the Delaware state line; DE 896 continues southeast from the border toward Newark.[2] The state highway is a two-lane road with a speed limit of 45 mph (72 km/h). MD 896 heads northwest toward its only intersection, with Little Egypt Road.[1] The state highway curves north and enters Pennsylvania, where the highway continues as PA 896 toward Strickersville.[2]

History

MD 896 was constructed in 1925 as Maryland's very short portion of the highway between Newark and the Lincoln Highway near Lancaster.[3][4] The state highway was originally designated MD 278.[5] MD 896 received its present designation around 1942 to maintain continuity between PA 896 and DE 896, the latter of which had been assigned in 1938.[6][7][8]

Junction list

The entire route is in an unincorporated area of far northeastern Cecil County.
