It comes under the umbrella of Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (Asia) or COMSATS, an international inter-governmental organization.
COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) started its journey in 1998, and established its first campus at Islamabad in April 1998. In August 2000, in recognition of CIIT's achievements, the Federal Government granted it the status of a Degree Awarding Institute (DAI) through promulgation of its charter vide the Presidential Ordinance No. XXXVIII issued on 12th August, 2000. CUST imparts education to over 18000 students nationwide.

CUST National Ranking
CUST is ranked at 6th position in Pakistan, while in world rankings it lies among the top 1000 universities.[2] in the Engineering discipline according to the HEC ranking issued in 2008. It is ranked 1st in the Computer Science discipline, according to HEC. In terms of research output, CUST has been ranked at number four among institutions of higher education numbering more than 114 in the country during 2005-07. In terms of research citations, the research produced at CUST has been ranked at number two in Pakistan, as verified by web of Sciences.[3]
COMSATS University
The Federal Cabinet of Pakistan charter for COMSATS University[4] on Thursday, October 5, 2011 , upgraded COMSATS Institute of Information Technology into a university. The charter for COMSATS university is in lines with the Model University Ordinance 2002.
Campuses of CUST
CUST is an institution of higher learning with multi-campuses across the country. The CUST, besides its principal campus at Islamabad, has six other campuses at Lahore, Abbottabad, Wah, Attock, Sahiwal and Vehari, while more campuses are in the planning stage. On the advice of the Federal Government, efforts are under way to open an overseas campus in the Gulf region. [5] Functional campuses:

Research and Development
Realizing the acute shortage of highly qualified researchers and scientists and to enhance research culture among the CUST Faculty, the Research and Development (R&D) Division was established in January, 2005. From its very inception, the R&D Division under the dynamic and visionary leadership of the Rector, is playing an active and vital role to enhance and encourage the CUST Faulty to contribute and share in promoting the research activities by submitting their research proposals in all the disciplines.
