LUMS was established by industrialists and people belonging to Pakistan's leading private and public sector corporations, with the goal of developing an institution that would not only provide rigorous academic and intellectual training to Pakistani students and scholars, but also make available state-of-the-art research facilities, which would be comparable to leading universities around the world. History

The university was granted a charter by the Government of Pakistan in March 1985. The LUMS Board of Trustees comprises leading members of the domestic business community, academics, and government representatives. The principal functions of the board are to set policy guidelines and to review the operations of the university. The Board of Governors, as the sponsor of LUMS, raises funds necessary for the university's operation and maintenance. Many board members are representatives of the business community and form a crucial link between the university and the Pakistani business world.

Organization

*Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB)The Business School was the first school established at the Lahore University of Management Sciences in 1986, following a growing recognition that Pakistan needed good managers to meet the challenges of the future. The principal goals of the school include an original and innovative curriculum, a high-quality student intake, and a motivated and qualified faculty.

*School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)The School of Humanities and Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate (Masters) degrees in mathematics, economics, social sciences, computer Science and computer engineering (the last two of which will be shifted to the School of Science and Engineering from 2008 onwards). In addition to this it also offers Doctoral programs in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Mathematics. All science and engineering programmes will be moved to the SSE after its inauguration. It also offers a combined BA-LLB degree.

*School of Science and Engineering (SSE)The School of Science and Engineering or SSE is expected to start in the fall of 2008. It is anticipated that this school would be split into schools of engineering and science at a later stage to signify the difference between applied and basic sciences respectively.

*School of Law and PolicyThe School of Law and Policy will be established with the expansion of the Department of Law and Policy currently under the School of Humanities and Sciences at a later stage.

*School of Education and Applied PsychologyThis school is currently in the early planning stages and would offer a 5 year B.A-M.Ed or B.Sc-M.Ed degrees in collaboration with other schools of this university. In due course, MA and PhD programmes in applied, managerial and child psychology, education, and human development will be offered. As is the norm in the industrialized world, B.Ed degrees are not offered right after graduation from high school. Consequently, no B.Ed curriculum will be offered at LUMS.

Faculty

The LUMS faculty includes PhDs from some of the best universities in the world, including Stanford, Rice University, MIT, the University of California, Berkeley, University of Manchester, McGill University, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Pennsylvania, Loughborough University, University of Toronto, University of Texas at Austin, University College London, Imperial College London, National University of Singapore, Cambridge University, Oxford University, Yale University, and Harvard University. The faculty currently includes three Rhodes Scholars.

Research at LUMS

LUMS enjoys a great reputation for research. Graduate-level students are associated with research labs related with their course work. Every year a significant amount of research work is done collaboratively between LUMS faculty and its students which gets published in international and national conferences and papers.Furthermore with the establishment of SSE in 2008, the university promises even greater research in the field of science and engineering. The project management has laid immense emphasis on cutting edge research- of a calibre which has not yet been witnessed in Pakistan. LUMS has secured massive amounts of funding for this purpose.

LUMS Library

The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Library is the first automated library of Pakistan that has been providing excellent services and facilities to fulfill the information needs of its clients. The library is equipped with state-of-the-art systems and technologies. It has a collection of over 180,000 volumes. The library is managed by qualified and experienced staff, dedicated to provide high quality innovative services. Its culture of trust, tolerance, sharing and self servicing makes it a unique library of the region.

Our mission is to excel in supporting the academic and scholarly endeavor of our users, in their core instructional and research requirements through utilizing the best possible resources, systems and services.

The library aims to encourage and support the academic and research activities of LUMS faculty, staff and students. It provides a full range of services that include loans, online information searching, reference services, inter-library loan, document delivery, photocopying, viewing of audiovisual and microfilm materials, access to virtual collections & digital resources, CD-ROM & online searching etc.

The LUMS library has always been a source of inpiration for other academic libraries around the country. Being an initiator in using latest library technologies,it has become a trend-setter and a bench-mark in Pakistan.

International recognition

LUMS is an internationally recognized institute with its graduates recruited by companies such as Cisco Systems, Sun Microsystems, BP, 3M, Google, Shell, Deloitte, Accenture, Countrywide Bank, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup, London Stock Exchange, IBM, Bank of America, Indymac Bank, AOL, Microsoft, Ernst & Young, Mashreq Bank and Habib Bank. The school's reputation seems to have spread beyond just domestic applicants though, as a large number of applications also come in from the Middle East, the Far East, Central Asia, and other parts of South Asia. Recently, LUMS acknowledged its place as one of the first university in Pakistan to conduct bilateral exchange programs for undergraduate students. In spring 2007, three LUMS students visited Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan sponsored by Mitsubishi. Also, LUMS initiated exchange programs with universities in mainland Europe as well. Now, LUMS undergraduates frequently attend international programs in US, Europe, Australia and the Far East Asia.

tudent life

University campus contains an academic block, a library, an IT building, a Pepsi-sponsored dining center (PDC), Executive Development Center, a mosque and a Sports complex. The Sports complex houses world class squash courts,a basketball court, badminton and table tennis facilities, a gym, a fitness room, a music room, a chess room, an art room, etc. Hostels are segregated, with exclusive male and female residential arrangements.

LUMS students also take part in extracurricular activities such as managing academic conferences, hosting charity shows and debating events. Student societies, clubs, and associations help to meet the recreational and vocational needs of students, who also bring with them a rich blend of extracurricular interests.

LUMS has a plethora of societies that are almost always active through out the year. Recently LUMS has emerged as the hub of the nascent but burgeoning Student Movement in Pakistan, advocating the cause of rule of law, independence of the judiciary and free media. The Student Council at LUMS along with the newly-created Student Action Committee are spearheading a new wave of political consciousness and activism amongst the students. The movement that began at LUMS is spreading beyond the campus and is inspring students around the country.

Financial Aid

LUMS has a need-blind admission policy and promises partial and full tuition fee waivers to all deserving applicants who secure admission and apply for financial assistance. The aid is granted after detailed assessment of the applicant's financial circumstances.

National Outreach Programme

LUMS has launched a National Outreach Programme to reach out to bright students from underprivileged areas of Pakistan. Under this initiative, induction of selected candidates into the various academic programs will be facilitated by preparation for the University’s rigorous admission criteria and then by provision of full financial assistance to those who qualify. Many students are admitted in LUMS on the basis of NOP. There are also a number of scholarships which are offered on need/academic achievement basis.
