There are three playable characters and many more non-playable characters who serve as antagonists and allies.[1]

The following is a list of prominent characters in the series.

Contents

Protagonists

Chris Jacobs

Appearances: Mercs: POD, Mercs 2: WIF

Christopher "Chris" Jacobs is a former Delta Force member from the United States. He is half-Black and half-Korean. After serving in the US Army for a number of years, he joined Executive Operations in 2004. He left in 2010 to form the Private Military Company with the other protagonists. He is the strongest mercenary and is able to speak Korean.

He is voiced by Phil LaMarr.

Jennifer Mui

Appearances: Mercs: POD, Mercs 2: WIF

Jennifer Mui is a former member of the Special Air Service and Secret Intelligence Service from the United Kingdom. She is the only female protagonist. Born in Hong Kong to an English father and Chinese mother, she joined Executive Operations in 2002 in order to earn more money to fund her extravagant lifestyle. She is the quietest mercenary and she can speak Mandarin Chinese.

She is voiced by Jennifer Hale.

Mattias Nilsson

Appearances: Mercs: POD, Mercs 2: WIF

Mattias Nilsson is a biker from Sweden. He served in the Swedish Navy and Army and was later a professional criminal with the Wolfpack Brotherhood motorcycle gang. After escaping from prison and fleeing the country, he became a mercenary. He served with Executive Operations from 2007 to 2010. He is the fastest mercenary and can speak Russian.

He is voiced by Peter Stormare.

Other ExOps and PMC members

Ewan Devlin

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Ewan Devlin is a skilled helicopter pilot from Ireland. He had a short and controversial stay in the military where he became a helicopter pilot. He then took that training and worked as a freelance mercenary in Iraq and Darfur. He was eventually hired by Universal Petroleum and worked for them in Venezuela. During the Venezuelan Conflict, he assists the mercenary in dropping listening posts to triangulate the location of a kidnapped UP executive. Lamenting that they "did not have an Irish guy", the merc suggests that Ewan leave Universal Petroleum and work for the Private Military Company. Ewan then leaves UP and joins the mercenaries and Fiona Taylor in their mission to hunt down Ramon Solano. He also gives them information on a local mechanic, Eva Navarro. Ewan is vital to the mercenary's efforts, as he is the only way that the vehicles and supplies the mercenary purchases are delivered to the combat area.

Personality-wise, Ewan is laid back and calm, though sometimes appearing to be a little lazy. His own corner of the PMC is decorated with a zebra-skin rug, an Irish tricolour, a comfortable couch, softly glowing candles, a curtain held up by a broken helicopter rotor and pictures of women in various states of undress that are holding various weapons. Ewan is also a womanizer, and makes several advances towards Eva and Fiona as well as bragging to his boss about women he brings over to the PMC. While reportedly an experienced combat pilot, he openly admits to never intentionally flying into a warzone and will flee if the drop area is not relatively free of enemy ground fire. He also finds Fiona using weapons to be "arousing". Ewan's personal helicopters are a UH-1 Iroquois (known in-game as a Castro Transport) painted green and with a pin-up girl on the side and an Mi-26 "Halo" (a Jade Wind Heavy Transport or Condor), also painted with an Irish theme and one or more of pin-up girls on the sides. The smaller helicopter he flies when delivering packages and light vehicles is called "The Lucky Lady", while the larger one for heavier vehicles is called "The Lucky Ladies".

He is voiced by David Agranov.

Mischa Milanich

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Mischa Milanich (Russian: Миша Миланич) is a Russian jet pilot who always seems to be drunk; he claims that he never sobers up. He has been a mercenary for a long time, following in the footsteps of the Milanich family. He used to work with the Venezuelan Army until one day when he dropped a bomb in the wrong place. His commander, Lieutenant Falcon, gave him wrong coordinates and ended up dropping a bomb on a Venezuelan position. Falcon's commanders got mad at Falcon, Falcon got mad at Mischa, Mischa left them, the Venezuelan Army put a bounty on his head. He then ended up with the Balseros Crew because of their ferocity and craziness. He eventually hires the mercenary to kill Lt. Falcon. With help from the player, Mischa uses a bunker buster to destroy Falcon's fortification, thus killing him. After this job, he joins the Private Military Company.

When he relocates to the PMC HQ, he makes his living space upstairs, sitting on a couch facing a television with many alcohol bottles scattered around him. There is also a jet plane's turbine engine located behind him as well. Mischa's primary duty is to bombard any target designated by the mercenary with the airstrike of their choice. He also offers a challenge which involves standing on a small cliff over-looking an open area filled with Venezuelan Army jeeps, trucks and also explosive barrels and oil tanks. The aim is to call in two airstrikes and see how many vehicles and barrels the player can destroy by causing chain reactions.

Eva Navarro

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Eva Navarro is a Venezuelan mechanic who the mercenary first hears of after gaining information from helicopter pilot Ewan Devlin. The merc proceeds to her garage near the abandoned strip mine. After talking to her, she agrees to join the player if he/she agrees to test drive one of her prototype creations, a large monster truck. The player drives through the strip mine, avoiding booby traps, PLAV and Venezuelan Army troops, and using the truck's hydraulic jets (which provide limited flight) to navigate the harsh terrain. The player has to successfully navigate the mine by passing a series of checkpoints without totally destroying the truck, and eventually make it back to the garage, gaining Eva's help. As she enters the Private Military Company, she throws a knife at one of Solano's portraits, later apologizing for "over-reacting."

Eva is a mechanic and engineer, and, naturally, takes up residence in the PMC garage. Like all other recruits, she offers wagers that are rewarded with cash and custom vehicles. She offers two types of wagers: races and destruction races. Races are very much alike to the first test drive for Eva, with the player passing a series of checkpoints before running out of time. Destruction races are almost the same thing, but with the player having the option to destroy targets around the course for extra time and rewards. Provided with enough spare part kits, which can be found scattered all around Venezuela, you can purchase custom vehicles from her to be available in the stockpile.

She is voiced by Gwen Copeland.

Fiona Taylor

Appearances: Mercs: POD, Mercs 2: WIF

Fiona Taylor is an Australian woman commonly portrayed as a technical support for the player. She was previously a member of the Royal Australian Navy as a Lieutenant, specializing in submarine electronics warfare, and then as an operative for the Australian Secret Intelligence Service but then gave it up fairly early to join ExOps.

In Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, Fiona provides technical support for the player during their stay in North Korea. She is never physically seen in the game, operating outside the theatre of battle. She does however, have a portrait in the instruction manual for the game, which shows her as having blonde hair.

During the events of Mercenaries 2, Fiona continues to act as the technical support for the three mercenaries after their departure from ExOps. She appears to have dyed her hair, as it is now red as opposed to blonde from the first game. During the Universal Petroleum contract "Phone Tag", it is revealed that after an operation with the mercs in Montenegro, something went wrong with the people they were working with and from that point on they agreed to work alone; however creating their own PMC was an exception.

She is voiced by Amy Lee in the first game, and India Dupre in the second.

Allied Nations

Samuel Garrett

Appearances: Mercs: POD

Colonel Samuel Garrett is the leader of the Allied Nations forces in North Korea. Wearing military drabs, he can always be found inside the AN headquarters, unless he is standing outside it. Incredibly influential, all of the AN forces inside of North Korea take orders directly from him, and he is the only person that can give the player the Ace Contracts. Garrett also has 3 fish, two of which he named, and the other being named by his wife. He can get very prone to anger in a bad situation and is very stressed when the mercenary first meets him due to him having to go through so much red tape just to go after the Two of Clubs who has been shelling the AN HQ. Due to his current problems at that time, he immediately denies to speak with the mercenary by claiming he had enough problems already. However after the mercenary verifies the Two of Clubs he respects more and trusts them to future contracts.

Garrett is very open about his problems which are made worse due to the GSRN news reporters constantly breathing down his neck. He tries to keep the mercenary as secretive as he can and lies to the GSRN all the time which can be heard on the radio near the GSRN trucks, claiming it was AN soldiers who captured the HVT and not the mercenary.

He is voiced by Carl Weathers.

Phillip Joyce

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Agent Phillip Joyce is the CIA operative in charge of Allied Nations operations in Venezuela. Joyce and the Chinese commander, Peng are both at odds. Both promise the mercenary a nuclear bunker buster weapon needed for capturing Ramon Solano.

Joyce is only concerned with capturing Venezeula's oil supply, and wants the mercenary to weaken the Chinese forces to suit the AN's own gain. However, a Venezuelan ambush involving an IED leaves him crippled and wheelchair-bound due to his co-operation with the mercenary. After the merc completes the contracts and kills or captured Peng, Joyce refuses to supply the nuclear bunker buster weapon to the them. At the moment of the meeting, Solano, using a nuclear weapon from North Korea, attacks the AN HQ, and Joyce agrees to give the merc the weapon.

Patterson

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Patterson is the AN soldier in charge of the Port Of Caracas Outpost as well as commander of all Forward Operations during the Venezuelan Conflict. He offers the player a single mission, to capture another outpost.

Balseros Crew

Devilbwoy

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Devilbwoy is the leader of the Balseros Crew, a group of Jamaican pirates operating off the coast of Venezuela. He wears a long brown trench coat and white face-paint. He drives his own specialized dune-buggy named appropriately. Devilbwoy's Buggy. He hires the mercenary on a number of occasions, mainly on smuggling missions.

In the PS2 version, he is replaced by pirate contact Daevon Risto. The pair look exactly alike and Risto also hangs out at the Pirate HQ.

He is voiced by Andrew Kishino.

China

Zhou Peng

Appearances: Mercs: POD, Mercs: WIF

Colonel (and later General) Zhou Peng (Chinese: 周蓬) is the leader of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and the mercenary's Chinese contact for both games.

Peng, a Colonel in 2009, is the leader of the PLA during the "Song Initiative" after North Korea is discovered to have nuclear weapons and the capability to deliver them anywhere in the world. While on the surface wishing to end the nuclear threat, China - and by extension Peng - wish to see North Korea turned into a province for China PR. Though the head of a massive and powerful army, Peng also realizes that it lacks the finesse required for more delicate, covert operations. Most of his missions typically see the mercenary as a spearhead for his forces, ad-hoc re-enforcements or rescuing important members of his staff from harm. China's ambitions put him at odds with the South Koreans and CIA Special Agent Mitchell Buford in particular. Depending on the player's actions, China may or may not be successful in expanding its reach into North Korea.

Peng of Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction has a cool, collected personality. Even when angered, he never raises his voice and rarely displays emotion. Peng is very direct, fully recognizing the limitations of the vast and powerful People's Liberation Army. He is not above sarcasm, greeting the mercenary as "violence for profit; the two hallmarks of Western ideology together in one package". He also places a high value in his own interpretation of honor, respecting Agent Buford as a worthy opponent and contemptuously regarding the Russian mafia as scavengers. If the mercenary works with Peng consistently, his respect for and trust in the mercenary will grow. As China fully completes the beginning of its takeover of North Korea and prepares for war with South Korea, Peng admits that the PLA's goals could not have been so fully met without the mercenary's assistance.

In 2010, and now a General, Peng is in command of the PLA's expeditionary force in Venezuela. Creating his headquarters from an old fort, Peng seeks to control the oil supply to fuel his nation as a rising superpower. Unlike the Allied Nations, who are covert in their desire for oil, Peng and his army are more openly seeking Venezuela's oil reserves. After both China and the AN invade Venezuela after it has become evident that their respective proxies can not keep the oil flow secure, the mercenary approaches Peng looking for a nuclear bunker buster to defeat a hardened bunker used by Ramon Solano. Peng offers it if the mercenary can push the Allies out of Venezuela. After several successful missions, including rescuing a party official, nearly single-handedly taking over Caracas and capturing or killing the Allied commander, CIA Agent Joyce, Peng gives the mercenary the nuclear bunker buster after the Chinese HQ is attacked with a nuclear bomb, after which Peng is (temporarily) forced to withdraw.

General Peng is a very different man from the colonel he was in North Korea. He now shouts if he feels it is necessary to get his point across, and passionately speaks of his desire to see the AN and China face one another in battle. General Peng, in contrast to his reluctance to use the mercenary as an option before, now delights at the idea, and greets the mercenary as a friend in their first meeting in Venezuela. Honor and truthfulness still mean a great deal to Peng, and true to his word, he promptly delivers a nuclear bunker-buster to the mercenary once his terms are met.

He is voiced by James Hong.

North Korea

Choi Kim

Appearances: Mercs: POD

President Choi Kim (Hangul: 최 김) was the President of North Korea. He began embracing the "Sunshine Policy" of South Korea, reviving hopes of peaceful reunification. However, the North Korean military became disgruntled with this and feared they would lose power. In 2009, General Choi Song, the DPRK Army's leader and Kim's son, and his men stormed a Korean relations ceremony and killed political leaders from the North and South. A coup d'état followed and Song's regime took over.

Originally, it was stated that Kim had been shot by his son during the ceremony bloodbath. But analysis of a video tape recovered from a North Korean nuclear facility gave birth to rumors of him still being alive. During the assault on Song's missile base, Choi Kim was found in a prison. He had been tortured for days and the Allied Nations forces extracted him. It is likely that he resumed his presidency after the end of the conflict.

Choi Song

Appearances: Mercs: POD

General Choi Song (Hangul: 최 송) is the main antagonist of Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. He staged a coup d'état against his father Choi Kim's government and supposedly shot him. Replacing his father's government with a dictatorship, Choi Song cut off all connections to North Korea, and also set up a massive nuclear program and secretly sold a shipment of nuclear weapons to known terrorist elements, which were intercepted by the Royal Australian Navy.

After the Allied Nations declared war on North Korea, Song and his top officials were given card titles in the Deck of 52, with Song declared the "Ace of Spades". A massive bounty of $100,000,000 was put on his head, leading ExOps to deploy their mercenaries to North Korea. It soon appeared that Choi Kim was, in fact, alive, and was held hostage in Song's nuclear missile base. The AN and ExOps invaded the missile base to stop a massive nuclear strike, freed President Kim, and either captured or killed Song.

Russian Mafia

Misha

Appearances: Mercs: POD

Misha, not to be confused with Mischa Milanich from Mercs 2, is Josef Yurinov's Lieutenant after Sergei sets him and the mercenary up to be ambushed and killed during an arms deal. Misha appears to be a standard thug, armed with a Type 85 submachine gun, and wearing the outfit of a Mafia Thug. Josef introduces Misha at the briefing for the mission "Housekeeping", and from then on, Misha is the one who the player goes to accept a contract.

Sergei Voronov

Appearances: Mercs: POD

Sergei Voronov (Russian: Сергей Воронов) is the leader of the Russian Mafia for the majority of the campaign in Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. He is also the administrator of the black market website Merchant of Menace, which is run by the Mafia.

Sergei is a highly erratic and paranoid individual, frequently threatening to kill the mercenary or anyone else who gave him real or imagined insult. He often makes extremely bold demands during missions, several of which are not to the low-profile standards the Mafia adheres to. Josef often has to correct Sergei when he begins to go out of control. His paranoia eventually drives him to make the ill-founded decision to betray both Josef and the mercenary, as Sergei has become convinced they are out to get him. Ironically, it is this act that causes the mercenary and Josef to actually turn against him, and Sergei loses control of the Russian Mafia in North Korea. After the mercenary and men loyal to Josef defeat those loyal to Sergei, he attempts to flee North Korea as the Mafia HQ comes under attack. Sergei may or may not be killed in his attempted escape, depending on the mercenary's actions.

Sergei also seems to have a very small memory span, and is often forgetting things from films he's seen, what people have been doing, and even things he tells the mercenary at the start of their conversations. It can also be inferred, due to his frequent "sniffing", that Sergei uses, and likely abuses, cocaine. This would at least partially account for his erratic and paranoid behavior. He is a fan of The Godfather, and tries to emulate Vito Corleone, though mistakenly believing his pet is a monkey, rather than a cat. This leads to a rather humorous rant which concludes with Sergei demanding that someone get him a monkey.

He is voiced by Chris Cox.

Josef Yurinov

Appearances: Mercs: POD

Josef Yurinov (Russian: Йозеф Юринов) is the Lieutenant of Sergei Voronov, and according to Sergei, a former member of the KGB. Over the course of the North Korean Conflict, he plans to take Sergei down, appointing himself the leader of the Russian Mafia in North Korea. During an "arms deal" set up by Sergei, Josef and the player are ambushed, set up by Sergei. When Josef returns to the Mafia headquarters, he appoints Misha as his new Lieutenant, and helps the player track down and kill Sergei.

Josef is almost an exact contrast to Sergei in terms of personality. He is an astute professional, often adding amendments to Sergei's overly bold and high-profile missions. He speaks in a cool, calm manner and handles the transition from Sergei to himself quite smoothly, ruthlessly exterminating any remaining support for Sergei. He can be seen as the metaphorical "power behind the throne", keeping the enforcers in check. He is also always constantly reminding Sergei of things he has said or has forgotten, which is almost everything and handles trade deals with other people very calmly and easily, mostly with the Deck of 52 members, which means they tell him their whereabouts and if the mercenary does some jobs for the Mafia, Josef will gladly send an e-mail to Fiona Taylor, telling her of their whereabouts. Josef has spoken with the Seven of Clubs, Jack of Clubs and possibly the Four of Clubs.

If the player chooses to play as Mattias Nilsson, it is revealed that Mattias and Josef did work together in Kosovo. This is most likely how Mattias became fluent with the Russian language.

South Korea

Mitchell Buford

Agent Mitchell Buford is an American CIA agent. He is the main contact for the mercenary within the South Koreans. Although he isn't technically a member of the South Korean Army, he is the one who is working with them to help them take care of General Song due to their lighter armour and lesser numbered soldiers. This "alliance" is known as the South Korean Union (SKU) which is made up of the CIA-backed Republic of Korea Army in hopes that Buford can provide a happy and peaceful friendship between the East the West.

Buford is a veteran CIA agent who has been working in the field for a very long time and, apparently, hasn't had very much luck in his career. He sees the Song Initiative to be a chance to "get it right" and reunify Korea in hopes of it becoming a pro-Democracy and a strong ally of America to increase its area of influence. He can best be described as a "Cold War relic", as his distaste towards Communism attests, and because of this, he also hates the current government of China and hopes that by defeating them in Korea it will change them and hopefully convert them to a Democracy. He is a very Western-style man and prefers the company of the merc. Whereas the mercenary has to work against Colonel Peng's inclination to dislike them, Buford is friendly to the mercenary from the start. Although it may seem that Buford does not really like the South Korean army, he actually does care for his troops and would rather not risk their lives in battle. This means that the South Korean forces engage in fewer frontline engagements with opposing forces, and are generally more low-key than the Chinese and AN.

He is voiced by Bruce McGill.

Universal Petroleum

Victor Contreras

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Victor Contreras is an executive in Universal Petroleum's "higher up" branch. He is in need of rescue in the first part of the game when the mercenary is introduced to UP. Apparently, the Venezuelan Army are holding him for ransom and it is up to the merc, with the help of the Tactical Solutions Inc. mercenaries, to find and rescue him.

After helping Ewan Devlin place the three listening posts to triangulate the position of Victor, eventually the Venezuelan captors declare that UP have failed to evacuate the country and they are going to kill Victor. Fiona Taylor then gets a fixed location on Victor and notices he is being transported in an armoured truck which is resiliant to small arms fire. The merc then hijacks the truck and kills the driver, saving Victor and returning him to the UP HQ.

Drew Marlowe

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Drew Marlowe is the Manager of the Universal Petroleum Oil Depot, located a few blocks from the HQ itself. He gives the player the mission to recapture the Altagracia Outpost and gives them their first look at UP's weapon, vehicles and airstrikes shop. His command structure is also ironically on China's target list, should the player take their offer to wipe Universal Petroleum's operations off the map.

Sean McKinnery

Sean McKinnery is a commander of the Tactical Solutions Inc. forces in UP's industrial sector in Cabimas, located next to Altagracia. He is also the officer in charge of putting out oil fires and always wears a Hazmat suit.

Lorraine Rubin

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Dr. Lorraine Rubin is the executive of Universal Petroleum assigned to run the Venezuelan branch of UP. She based UP in Maracaibo and hired the Texas-based private military company Tactical Solutions Inc. to provide security for her and her colleagues in Venezuela. Rubin held the rights to the majority of the oil in the country. She was opposed by the PLAV forces led by Marcela Acosta, and also hired the mercenary to get the country's dictator Ramon Solano.

After the invasion of Venezuela by the Chinese and the Allied Nations, the Chinese ordered the mercenary to destroy the Maracaibo bridge, UP oil depot and the UP HQ. The Allied Nations also supported this move in order to obtain the oil supply. Though Tactical Solutions and AN troops guarded the corporate Headquarters, Rubin herself and much of the executive staff had already left an hour earlier on plane back to UP's supposed primary HQ in Texas.

She is voiced by Gwen Copeland.

Venezuela

Blanco

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Blanco is a Liberian mercenary working for Ramon Solano. He is first seen in the opening cutscene greeting the mercenary as they talk about an old job they previously worked together on in Dakar, Senegal, with the mercenary mockingly referring to Blanco fleeing the scene, leaving the mercenary to fend for him/herself. Blanco makes the excuse that he was "cutting his losses" and that the "money all dried up" and advised the mercenary to have done the same, to which the merc replies that he/she "always got paid". Blanco introduces the merc to Solano, and stays back at the villa while the mercenary handles General Carmona's rescue. When Solano betrays the mercenary, Blanco sides with Solano, holding his hunting pistol at the mercenary before being easily disarmed and subdued. Later, Blanco is revealed to have become Solano's liaison with the CEO of Universal Petroleum, Dr. Rubin.

Carlos Carmona

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

General Carlos Carmona is a major player in the Venezuelan Army, commanding several large divisions of its forces. Some time before the mercenary arrived in Venezuela, Carmona was recruited by Ramon Solano to instigate a coup against the government. However, he was captured and held prisoner by pre-Solano government loyalists on Isla de Mano. With the help of Blanco, Solano hired the services of a mercenary to free Carmona and return him safely back to his villa. At this point, Solano turns against the mercenary, with Carmona holding them at gunpoint with a Luger. The mercenary manages to escape, albeit shot in the posterior by one of the soldiers in the villa. Carmona then initiates his coup, and Solano becomes the de facto leader of the Venezuelan nation.

Ramon Solano

Appearances: Mercs 2: WIF

Ramon Solano is the main antagonist of Mercenaries 2. He is the son of drug lord and billionaire Eduard Solano who gained his funds by creating one of the top software companies in Venezuela. He eventually uses his connections and funding to recruit a General - Carlos Carmona - in the Venezuelan Army into inciting a military coup. This fails, and in order to rescue Carmona, he hires a mercenary, the player, to rescue him.

Through another mercenary named Blanco acting as a go-between, he recruits the mercenary and sends them off to rescue Carmona. With the rescue successful, Solano then betrays the merc, likely knowing that anyone opposed to his regime could re-hire the mercenary to topple him. After an escape from his villa, which includes getting shot in the buttocks, the mercenary vows to take revenge on Blanco, Carmona and make Solano remember the mercenaries' "golden rule": "everybody pays!". Following leads put forth by the Universal Petroleum Corporation and the People's Liberation Army of Venezuela, the mercenary eventually neutralizes Blanco, destroys an oil rig and finds Solano's bunker, which is hardened against everything save a nuclear bunker buster.

After doing favors for either the Allied Nations or China's People's Liberation Army (which includes single-handedly taking over the capital city, Caracas), the mercenary obtains a nuclear bunker buster, but not before Solano detonates a nuclear weapon over the headquarters of the faction that you worked with to take over Caracas. The said faction then gives the mercenary the nuke to catch Solano.

After fighting their way to Solano's bunker in Angel Falls, the mercenary then uses the bunker buster to destroy the bunker. In a final, harrowing confrontation with Solano on-board an escaping Mil Mi-24, the mercenary comes face-to-face with Solano for a final time before executing him, escaping the crashing helicopter just before it crashes.

He is voiced by Jim Ward.

Other

Adriana Livingston

Appearances: Mercs: POD, Mercs 2: WIF

Adriana Livingston is an English news reporter for the Global Satellite Reporting Network (GSRN). She appears throughout the games, reporting on major events. She is voiced by Moira Quirk.
