"Don't Cha" is the debut single by American R&B/pop girl group the Pussycat Dolls. The song was originally recorded by American recording artist Tori Alamaze, and was released as her debut single in March 2005, on Universal Records. After Universal Records dropped her from the label, Cee-Lo Green gave the track to the Pussycat Dolls. The song was released in 2005 as the lead single from the Dolls' debut studio album PCD. "Don't Cha" is about a girl who teases a guy that she is hotter than his girlfriend.

"Don't Cha" has received mostly positive reviews from most music critics who praised its R&B grooves and it high dose of energy. The song has also achieved commercial success by topping charts in Australia, Belgium, the Republic of Ireland, the New Zealand, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, as well as reaching the top ten in many other countries.

The music video of the song portrayed the Pussycat Dolls lingering in various locations dressed in seductive clothing as they dance and sing. "Don't Cha" was performed by the Dolls in a number of live appearances including their first headlining PCD World Tour and the second worldwide tour Doll Domination Tour.

Background

The chorus of the song is based on Sir Mix A Lot's 1988 song "Swass" ("Don't you wish your boyfriend was swass like me?"). The song was later recorded by Tori Alamaze, it was initially to be her first single in preparation for her debut album, but then Universal decided to drop her name off the label stating, "the single wasn’t the right move". Subsequently producer Cee-Lo Green gave the track for the Pussycat Dolls, adding an additional rap verse by Busta Rhymes.[2] It managed to reache at number fifty-three on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[3] This song was initially offered to Sugababes and later Paris Hilton, but both declined.[4]

Critical reception

"Don't Cha" received mainly positive reviews. Lisa Haines from BBC described the track as "memorable". She continued saying "[it's] a groovy R&B duet with Busta Rhymes, is easily the best."[5] Sal Cinquemani from Slant Magazine said that, "[...] The Pussycat Dolls have certainly carved a niche for themselves in 21st century pop history. Their brassy, sassy debut single, 'Don't Cha', featuring Busta Rhymes, stormed the charts with its various incarnations, held from the pole position on Billboard's Hot 100 only by Mariah Carey's monster comeback 'We Belong Together'."[6] Isaac McCalla from About.com praised the song. "This single is a serious dose of high energy, wickedly fun and slammin' house music."[7] However John Murphy said that, [...] the single "Don't Cha" is rather good - a silky, sexy little number with a refrain of "don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me" that will become ubiquitous by the end of the month." However he later said that Busta Rhymes is annoying. "It's a shame that Busta Rhymes is as typically annoying as ever, but he doesn't spoil the song too much."[8]

Chart performance

In the United States, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at position ninety-five on the issue dated May 7, 2005.[9] On its sixteenth week the song peaked at number two, making the Pussycat Dolls highest single to date on Billboard's Hot 100.[10] It topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart, where it stayed for three consecutive weeks.[11] "Don't Cha" took 3-1/2 years to reach the 2 million mark in paid downloads.[12] According to according to Nielsen Soundscan, as of January 24, 2010 the song has sold 2,226,000 paid digital downloads in the United States.[13] The song was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipment of a million copies of the single.[14]

In Oceania the song topped on its first week at number one in both Australia and New Zealand, where in Australia it stayed there for seven non-consecutive weeks.[15] It was certified two-times platinum certification by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), and in New Zealand it was certified gold, selling over 7,500 copies, according to the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ).[16][17] Across Europe, the song reached number one on the European Hot 100 Singles. In the United Kingdom and Ireland the song debuted at number one.[15] It managed to stay at the top for three and four consecutive weeks respectively.[15] As of June 22, 2009 "Don't Cha" is the Dolls' best-selling single in the United Kingdom, with 521,872 copies.[18] It was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).[19] The song has also reached the peak in a number of European countries including Belgium (Flanders), Germany, Norway and Switzerland.[15]

Music video

The music video was directed by Paul Hunter.[20] Nicole Kea told MTV News that the video was all about having fun. "Busta Rhymes is pretty phat, man. He is so much fun. He's so humble and he just makes you feel good. When you're around him, you feel magical. The lyrics are, 'Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me.'... But if you see the video, it's all about being who you are, having fun and being confident — and feeling hot. It's not so much about looking hot ... although looking hot is important."[20]

MTV's Brandee J. Tecson commented, "leave it to the Pussycat Dolls to cast someone in their music video who can actually steal attention away from six gyrating half-naked chicks."[20] Billy Johnson, Jr. of Yahoo! Music said, "front and center, the stunning Nicole Scherzinger, surrounded by good company, pranced around in tank tops and short shorts while drag racing in convertible jeeps. They raised the bar."[21] VH1 listed "Don't Cha" at number fourteen on its Top 40 Videos of 2005.[22]
