Previously she was a financial comptroller and municipal councillor in Arviat, Karetak-Lindell ran for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons as a Liberal candidate in the 1997 federal election in the riding of Nunavut. She was re-elected easily in the 2000 and 2004 elections.[1]
She was the parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources in 2003.[1] She also served as the chair and vice-chair of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development,[1] a member of the Liaison Committee,[1] an associate member of both the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage[2] and the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities.[3]
Karetak-Lindell retained her seat in the 2006 federal election, but later announced she would not seek re-election in the 2008 election.[4] Her decision to step down was to spend more time with her family and to take care of her elderly parents.[4]
She was born in Arviat, Northwest Territories, now Nunavut,[1] and is of mixed Icelandic and Inuit descent. She is a single mother of four sons (Jackson, Amauyaq, KV and Nooks).
Karetak-Lindell currently volunteers on the board of directors of the Katimavik youth volunteer program.[5]
