It has a population of 2,048: 88% Romanians, 5% Germans, 4% Hungarians and 3% Roma. It is composed of three villages: Cloaşterf, Mihai Viteazu and Saschiz.
The commune is part of the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania, designated in 1993 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
