Station overview
Facilities
Mitcham is located at the western end of the Mitcham Road level crossing and between Calcutta Street and Colombo Street, the latter two providing station access.
The station consists of two side platforms; Platform 1 has a large brick building housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets, while platform 2 has a smaller brick building. A large Metcard ticket vending machine is located inside the waiting area, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins, with additional coin-only Metcard ticket vending machines situated in the waiting area and at the entrance to platform 2. Myki ticket vending machines are located inside the waiting room on platform 1, and at the entrance to platform 2.
A crossover and refuge siding are located at the Flinders Street end of the station, which allows Mitcham to be used as a terminus when necessary, although it is rarely used as such.
History
Mitcham station opened on 25 December 1882. It was upgraded to a Premium Station on 4 April 1996.[1] Boom barriers were provided at Mitcham Road in 1979.[2]
In December 2009 - January 2010 during the Springvale Road Nunawading grade separation works Mitcham, along with Blackburn were used as temporary interchanges for rail replacement buses. Mitcham buses, however, did not stop at Nunawading.
