Nunawading is a railway station on the Lilydale and Belgrave lines in Melbourne, Australia. It is located in Metcard ticketing Zone 2, and has 2 platforms. Nunawading is to be upgraded to Premium status during the 2007 / 2008 Financial year as part of the Victorian Government's Transport and Liveability statement released in May 2006.

History

Opened in 1886, it was originally named Tunstall station, and was later renamed when the area known as Tunstall was renamed Nunawading. It initially served the clay and brick producers in the area. Bus services used to operate between the station and the former VFL Park, but have ceased due to the ground's closure.

At the Melbourne side of the station is the busy Maroondah Highway/Springvale Road intersection, with more than 125,000 cars crossing the intersection each day. In RACV surveys the crossing has been named the worst congestion point in the state twice.cite web

accessdate=2008-09-16] A number of grade separation proposals have been made over the years, including the station similar to Boronia station. In September 2008 a contract was let to carry out the work, to start in January 2010 and cost about $120 million.

Facilities

Despite being located next to a bus interchange, the station is unstaffed except on weekday mornings. Platform 1 (to city) has a fibro station building resting on brick foundations, and platform 2 (from city) has a wooden building. A Telstra payphone is located on platform 2. There are three ticket machines at the station, with two on the citybound side and one coin-only machine on the outbound platform. On the citybound side there is also a newspaper dispenser and a pair of vending machines.

Semi-enclosed waiting facilities are provided on either platform. Nunawading is one of few host stations that has an attended booking office in the morning peak. It has a shopping strip located adjacent to the citybound side, and is surrounded by factory outlets, hardware stores and the like along the Maroondah Highway.

Bus services

Nunawading is the endpoint of the route 888/889 SmartBus, service from Nunawading to Chelsea, operated by Grenda's.
