City University of Seattle, also known as CityU, is a private not-for-profit institution of higher learning based in Bellevue, Washington, across Lake Washington from Seattle. CityU currently enrolls 7,639 students worldwide (08/09). The university consists of the School of Management, Albright School of Education, the Division of Arts/Sciences and Management Institute. CityU of Seattle offers campus education around the world and online education.

History

City University was established in 1973 by Dr Michael A Pastore in order to meet the need for higher education among working adults. Over the years, the school has expanded its locations worldwide and negotiated partnerships with educational institutions to offer certificate and degree programs. To date, City University has graduated over 40,000 students worldwide.

Accreditation

City University of Seattle holds regional institutional accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU).

Currently, City University of Seattle's School of Management is accredited with the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Campus

CityU has 27 campuses around the world. City University of Seattle's campuses in Washington are surrounded by a commercial hub of corporate headquarters such as T-Mobile, Microsoft, Starbucks, Expedia, and Eddie Bauer. The university's main campus location is statistically ranked as one of the wealthiest in the state of Washington, and incidentally, revealed in a Bizjournal study is that the city boasts the largest concentration of brainpower in the United States, with 47% of the population holding college degrees, nearly doubling the national average of 24.4%. It is also noted that according to a Central Connecticut State University study, Seattle is surveyed as one of the most literate and wired cities in the country.

School of Education

The university's School of Education is named after Dr. Gordon Albright, a distinguished educator, with a well-recognized career in education in Washington. He was a long serving teacher and principal in the Seattle School District. He then spent several years on the faculty at Seattle University. He advised City University of Seattle's during the founding years in 1973. He laid the groundwork for the School of Education in 1989 and guided the approval of School of Education's teacher preparation through the State of Washington's Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. He is also credited with the initial design of the Master of Education programs. Dr. Albright retired in 2000 and the School of Education was named in his honor to recognize his service to City University of Seattle and education in the State of Washington.

School of Management

Although the school is based in the Pacific Northwest, the university has currently established a far reaching presence around the globe by annually conferring degrees locally on three continents. Programs are established in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Mexico, Canada, Australia and China. Since the 90s, The School of Management has been strategically aggressive in this effort since the launching of one of the first MBA programs in Eastern Europe ^[2] in 1991 and one of the earliest government approved foreign MBA programs in China in 1996. Today, this initiative has led to partnership with local colleges and universities in eleven foreign countries. In 1999, the university's business school extended its reach with a partnership with Institutul Bancar Roman and the Romanian National Bank to offer business education and training to commercial banks and financial institutions. A partnership was also formed with CETYS Universidad and Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León of Mexico to offer business education. Further, expanded programs with countries such as Chile, England, Switzerland and Australia, global student and faculty perspectives are a mainstay in the CityU classroom.

City University of Seattle offers training, undergraduate and graduate education to representatives from Fortune 500 and multinational companies such as Royal Dutch Shell, E.I. Du Pont de Nemours, Microsoft Corp., The Boeing Co., Motorola Co, IBM, ABB, Nokia, Unisys, Xerox, Ford Motor Co, Apple Computer, General Electric Corp., General Motors Corp., Mobil Oil, Monsanto Company, Texaco, Johnson & Johnson and The World Bank.

Reputation

United States

• Forbes Magazine listed City University of Seattle as one of the "Top Twenty Universities" offering distance learning programs in the United States.^[3] Fast Company performed an editorial review of five U.S. universities offering online degee programs, gave CityU a grade of A-.^[4] In 2008, OEDb, a for profit organization, ranked CityU's online program as 28th in the nation. CityU is also published on the Bear's Guide to The Best MBAs by Distance Learning.^[5] 4icu.org Web Popularity Ranking, an independent web metrics search engine, places City University of Seattle in 6th place in the state of Washington.^[6]

• The City University of Seattle's Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was the overall league champion of 2006 and 2007. CityU’s U.S. team is the only SIFE team in North America that is made up entirely of international students and the only Western Washington team to advance to the national competition.

International

• City University of Seattle's Business School joint partnership with the Beijing University of Technology was recognized by World Executive Weekly, a leading Chinese management periodical established by Nobel Prize winner in economics, Robert A. Mundell, as "The Top Ten Most Influential Sino-Foreign Joint MBA Programs" in China. After establishing programs in Bulgaria, City University of Seattle's MBA program is considered to be an excellent addition to the educational spectrum available in the Balkan region.^{[citation needed]}
