Milton Keynes North is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from the 2010 general election. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. The constituency is the successor to North East Milton Keynes, which was abolished following the review of parliamentary representation in Buckinghamshire by the Boundary Commission for England.

Boundaries

The constituency takes up the majority of the area of the Borough of Milton Keynes and is one of the borough's two constituencies. The other, Milton Keynes South, which is to its south, covers a smaller area and is almost exclusively urban. On the other hand, Milton Keynes North has a larger rural area.

Boundary review

Following their review into parliamentary representation in Buckinghamshire, the Boundary Commission for England recommended changes to the existing Milton Keynes constituencies.

The Commission decided that there shall continue to be two parliamentary constituencies for Milton Keynes, but these shall be formed on a North/South basis, effectively abolishing the previous arrangement. The new constituency of Milton Keynes North largely replaces North East.

This seat is made up of the following electoral wards in the Borough:

• Bradwell
• Campbell Park
• Hanslope Park
• Linford North
• Linford South
• Middleton
• Newport Pagnell North
• Newport Pagnell South
• Olney
• Sherington
• Stantonbury
• Wolverton

Of these, Hanslope, Olney and Sherington are rural and the remainder are urban.

Future

As part of the Sixth Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, a 2011 report was published that purports to change the electoral make-up of the Buckinghamshire sub-region, which comprises Buckinghamshire and the Borough of Milton Keynes.^[2] It currently has 7 MPs and this figure would remain unchanged, despite the reduction of seats nationally from 533 to 502 in England and the Isle of Wight. In Buckinghamshire, only Milton Keynes South and Milton Keynes North exceed the electoral quota of around 76,000 by more than the allowed 5%, while Chesham and Amersham is 5% below it. However, only Beaconsfield would remain untouched. The changes would mean one constituency (Buckingham) would cross the boundary between the Borough of Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire.

The knock-on effect of this would be a slight shrinkage of Milton Keynes North. Although it would gain the wards of Danesborough and Walton Park to Milton Keynes South, it would lose the wards of Bradwell and Campbell Park. Danesborough's relative population would result in a population decrease of nearly 5,000. The nationwide review must be completed by October 2013 and was launched on 4 March 2011 with the initial proposals above made in September 2011. New boundaries would be in place for a May 2015 general election.
