Abū al-'Iz Ibn Ismā'īl ibn al-Razāz al-Jazarī (

Little is known about Al-Jazari, and most of that comes from the introduction to his "Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices". He was named after the area in which he was born, al-Jazira—the traditional Arabic name for what was northern
Mesopotamia and what is now northernIraq and northeasternSyria , between theTigris and theEuphrates . The hand-operated crank was known in Han China, but Al-Jazari was the first to incorporate it in a

In 1206, Al-Jazari described the first
suction pipes, suctionpump , double-action pump,valve , and crank-connecting rod mechanism, when he invented a twin-cylinder reciprocatingpiston suction pump. This pump is driven by awater wheel , which drives, through a system ofgear s, an oscillating slot-rod to which the rods of two pistons are attached. The pistons work in horizontally opposed cylinders, each provided withvalve -operated suction and delivery pipes. The delivery pipes are joined above the centre of the machine to form a single outlet into the irrigation system. This may be the only one of al-Jazari's water-raising machines which had a direct significance for the development of modern engineering. Al-Jazari developed the earliest water supply system to be driven by

automaton , which was a boat with four automatic musicians that floated on a lake to entertain guests at royal drinking parties. Al-Jazari's largest astronomical clock was the "castle clock", which is considered to be the first programmable
