New Zealand at the FIFA World Cup

New Zealand at the FIFA World Cup

The New Zealand national football team has participated in two FIFA World Cups, the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

At the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain, New Zealand played in Group 6 with Brazil, the USSR and Scotland. In its first game, New Zealand lost 5-2 to Scotland. In the second game, New Zealand lost 0-3 against USSR and in the last game Brazil defeated New Zealand 4-0. New Zealand was placed fourth in the Group and eliminated from the tournament. Steve Sumner scored New Zealand's first ever goal in the World Cup against Scotland.

At the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, New Zealand earned its first point in World Cup in its first group match against Slovakia. Winston Reid scored an injury time goal to draw the match 1-1. It went on to draw 1-1 against reigning World Champions Italy and 0-0 against Paraguay. By scoring three points, New Zealand was eliminated from the tournament, but finished third in their group over one of the tournament favourites Italy. With three drawn games, New Zealand were the only team to remain undefeated at the 2010 World Cup Finals as eventual winners Spain lost their opening round match against Switzerland.[1]
