He was a capable defender who liked to attack and was very strong in the air, he was often used as a striker and scored more than 50 goals in Rothmans League.Malcolmson played for Airdrieonians, Queen of the South and Albion Rovers in
Scotland before emigrating toNew Zealand in 1974.He represented the
All Whites at the1982 FIFA World Cup inSpain making one appearance in the tournament, against his native Scotland, in a 5-2 defeat, but did not feature for the other 2 group games against USSR and Brazil.
