New Taipei City (Chinese: 新北市; pinyin: Xīnběi Shì; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Sin-pak-chhī) is the most populous city of Taiwan. The area includes a substantial stretch of Taiwan's northern coastline and surrounds the Taipei Basin. New Taipei completely surrounds Taiwan's capital city Taipei, and is bordered by Keelung to the northeast, Yilan County to the southeast, and Taoyuan County to the southwest.

Name

New Taipei had been administered as Taipei County (Chinese: 臺北縣 or 台北縣) of Taiwan until its reorganization as a special municipality on December 25, 2010.

Initially the official English version of the city's name was assigned to be Xinbei City by the county authority, which is the pinyin transliteration of the Chinese city name.[1][2] The new mayor Eric Chu requested the name New Taipei City as the official English rendering instead.[3] New Taipei is named from "新臺北", where New is the literal translation of "新" and Taipei is the transcription of "臺北". Considering the mayor's request and the public opinion, the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) approved the name New Taipei City on December 31, 2010.[4]

Demographics

Over 80% of New Taipei's residents live in the 10 districts that were formerly county-controlled cities (Banqiao, Luzhou, Sanchong, Shulin, Tucheng, Xizhi, Xindian, Xinzhuang, Yonghe, and Zhonghe), which account for one-sixth of the area. 28.80% of the residents moved into the area from Taipei City (台北市).[clarification needed]
