The country is bordered to the north byLaos andBurma , to the east byLaos andCambodia , to the south by theGulf of Thailand andMalaysia , and to the west by theAndaman Sea andBurma . The capital and largest city of Thailand isBangkok . It is also the country's centre of political, commercial, industrial and cultural activities. Bangkok is known in Thai as "Krung Thep Mahanakorn", or, more colloquially, "Krung Thep".Thailand is considered to be the world's 50th largest country in terms of total area, with a surface area of approximately 513,000 km² (198,000 sq mi), and the world's 20th largest country in terms of population with approximately 63 million people. The population consists 80% of Thais, 10% of Chinese, and 3% of
